You Telecom, a telecom and broadband value added services company, is set to invest Rs 600 crore in the next three years to fund its expansion of broadband, voice over Internet protocol (VOIP), video and high-speed data services in 12 cities across the country.

You Telecom plans to fund its investment through a mix of debt and equity, said EVS Chakravarthy, CEO, You Telecom to Televisionpoint.com. A major chunk of the company's proposed investment will be on digital setup-boxes, modems, cables and other electronic and other network specific equipment.

Citigroup Venture Capital International (CVCI) has around 85% stake in You Telecom. Prior to 2006, the company was called Iqara Broadband and was owned by British Gas.

You Telecom had earlier acquired two companies in the broadband services segment - Ahmedabad based Icenet and Bangalore based Digital Infotainment.

Post acquisition, the company began offering voice, video and high-speed data services in Bangalore, Mumbai and Vizag. It plans to extend these services to other cities including Hyderabad, Surat, Baroda, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Delhi, Indore, Gurgaon and Pune.

\"The quality of our digital cable services is far superior to that of the existing direct-to-home (DTH) connections as we make use of advanced technologies such as hybrid fibre coaxail and optic fibre network,\" said Chakravarthy.

He claims that You Telecom offers an oncable modem here. These modems are widely used in the US and Canada. The company also plans to foray into the proposed Headed In The Sky (HITS) project.

The project will enable cable operators to receive programmes through satellite signals and distribute them to consumers, both in rural and urban areas. The company's revenues for the year 2007-08 stood at around Rs 100 crore and is projected to touch Rs 250 crore in two years.

They should really start giving more importance to broadband than any other services, india is lagging far behind than other developed nations in terms of broadband, world is progressing and enjoying more than 100Mbps speeds and we are still stuck at 1and 2Mbps, they should start investing more in their broadband market now, it's already high time..
