ummm.... because theres bsnl in chennai.... 😕

MTNL is there only in Mumbai and Delhi. Rest of India is covered by BSNL. Thats Systematic Monopoly by the government 😉

Yap, in Delhi and Mumbai its MTNL...well, but i need BSNL in Delhi...they have got really nice plans..

well depends. if u r more into uploading than MTNL has nice plans. BSNL counts both upload and download.

thats why MTNL is better for torrent downloaders. keeping a ratio of 1 with 2 mbps down and 256 kbps up is kinda tough. as uploads are not counted i can happily download (and upload) during the night time and keep uploading through the day. 😀

Ohh... I didnt know that BSNL counts uploads too... so whats the monthly upload limit?

upload and download limit is not separate. total of both is counted. so for 1GB limit plan, mathematically:u can upload 1GB and 0 MB downloadOR 0MB upload and 1GB downloadOR any combination as long as total doestn exceed 1GBafter that u will be charged.

Thats bad!!! In that case MTNL rocks 😉

because, Chennai is not Mahanagar, its Perunagar!

LoL 😛

yea its funny mtnl is not in kolkata or chennai. Inspite being govt org both mtnl and bsnl have different download plans. Heck plans of MTNL Mumbai are different than those of MTNL Delhi :madness:

So even if MTNL comes to Chennai u are not assured u get good plans 🙂

wiki link of MTNL:

Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

a quote from there:

Former Indian Communications Minister Thiru Dayanidhi Maran had declared year 2007 as \"Year of Broadband\" in India and MTNL is gearing up to provide five million Broadband connectivity by the end of 2007. MTNL has upgraded existing TriBand (Broadband) connections for a speed of up to 2 MB/s without any extra cost. This 2 MB/s broadband service is being provided by MTNL at a cost of just US$5.00 per month.
doesnt that sound too generous?? also as if at 5$ = almost rs. 200, they are giving us unltd.

the main reason i went to this site was to know why exactly were 2 cities separated from the rest of DoT in 1985-86? was it just easier management?

well, BSNL shud give uploads as free too..🙂..anywys MTNL rocks, upload as much as u want

Yes thats true but most users get 256kbps UL speeds only and only some in mumbai get 512kbps

However this is no good for our UL ratios on torrents since 512DL compared to 2048UL isn't great math,is it?

cuz its MAHANAGAR, dat means important cities and big ones. apparently dey think chennai isnt.

Dude,Its always been like this for ages. When MTNL was set up years/decades ago Delhi and Mumbai were the two big Mahanagars/Metros in those days.

Yes Kolkotta may have been bigger in size but the tele-density(User base) was low.So like the rest of india it was covered by Dept of Telecom(DOT) later renamed to BSNL, an all india service provider. Now we got more than a Dozen Metros but old things once done cant be undone so easily.
Else MTNL would have got licences to operate in other circles too, maybe even Chennai
