Having burnt my fingers once in the "broadband" bazaar, I am fighting shy of taking another chance and possibly losing my money again, though my burning desire for blazing speeds remains strong as ever. :) What I need, from more street-smart broadband users, is what to consider and what to reject at once. There are many lovely packages out there that are just bullsh!t and a first-timer cannot know them all.Lets make this forum more than just a place to rant. Thanks in advance for good advice...

Depends where you for each ISP. But regarding SIFY, doesn't matter where you are, it's a load of crap. Absolute raw deal. I'm in delhi, So I would suggest either Hotwire, Airtel, or Hathaway. You want to look for the unlimited deals if you're an internet fanatic like me ;).

Thanks, folks. I am in Mumbai. Airtel broadband requires an airtel handset and connection, no? How's Reliance broadband? I use Reliance so it maybe easier for me. Last I checked, Hathway was seriously slow - we have one at my office and it s*cked big-time. We done even share it and still it groans. But could be due to temporary network peobs, though the helpdesk never admit it.

airtel does not require u to have their telephone connection, the DSL technology does.

Well, while it is true that DSL technology is based on telephone lines, it is also true that to get a decent package from Airtel, they require you to get an Airtel voice package ... i.e. it is technically feasible to just give you the line and not charge you anything above and beyond the DSL costs, but Airtel requires you to take a voice package along with DSL (a minimum extra of 499 rupees I believe).... and that kind of s*cks in my opinion and is consistent with some real annoying practices that go on at Airtel (SMS Spam etc.)

well DSL is offered as a add-on technology. i definitely would like it if they give me DSL only considering i currently have 2 lines from them just to reach the levels of 256kbps. :)

Sudhir, in Bombay you might get Exatt... www.exatt.net or www.exatt.com

A few months ago I saw their site that mentioend 256kbps unlimited plans for rs 800 per month! I would kill for that kind of connection! And a guy on a IRC channel tells me they now offer 512k and 1 mbps unlimited at night plans...(dunno cost)

The website doesnt have the 256kbps / unlimtied plan mentioned on it now... but you can call and find out...?

How does that work?
1) Do you pay them 1800 for the DSL and then have 2 voice packages?
2) How do you connect the two connections together?

2 telephone lines. 2 dsl connections. 2 lan modems. 1 switch. i cannot use both the lines together. but then we are 4 dudes living together. :) but i think i can use them together once we get a server with 2 (maybe 3 lan cards) not sure. i got 3 network engineer friends... waiting to switch to a bigger apartment so that we have more space for another computer which can act as a server!

ywnmmsb, don't forget that these plans are "Up to 128kbps" and so on.... that technically means that you could get a "up to 512 kbps" connection and they give you 24kbps!!!

.....oh also, note that although their site doesn't mention it, several people have reported that their customer support personnel clarified that the plans have a 10GB llimit, and are thus technically not unlimited.

So not quite the future of Indian broadband.... or so I hope!
