Why is the Income Tax Department asking for mobile and email address verification this year?

Why not?! Its better.

You get SMS when you get refund. You get SMS when your return (signed page) reaches them.

Earlier most CAs would file returns with their numbers and e-mails.

Many people hire CA just for filing IT returns and many times CA changes every year. Creating different number / email id every year.

With this verification it will be easier to reach right person.

Dont know why you are asking it? Its not causing any privacy issue.

Because you anyway have to mention it in your returns.

So it is just verifying that its not wrong.

I mean what about people who do not have an email or mobile phones? Since when did it become necessary to have a mobile phone and email address to file return?

Huh? People filing IT returns mostly are earning people. So highly likely to have mobile and e-mail address.

Even then one e-mail and one mobile is allowed to link to 4 IT user ids. So older people can file using their child's email id or mobile.

Email should have been optional. Making mobile number compulsory is fine, as most of people do have mobile phones (unless somebody is Wart...). Besides mobile are now needed at many places like Gas booking, banks, etc; and mobile number adds security by sms verification.

Only Pan Card should be mandatory. It's a miracle that 5% of the people in this country pay taxes and now you want them to maintain a mobile number and email address as well?
