UTV BECOMES DISNEY COMPANY
Disney Raises Stake In UTV Software To 60%
UTV is a large, Indian integrated media and entertainment group. UTV India and its subsidiaries (UTV) create, aggregate and disseminate content of various genres across varied distribution platforms. The UTV Group's business activities have been broadly segmented into 5 categories, viz: TV Content Production & Services; Motion Pictures, Broadcast, Interactive (gaming) & New Media.
Over the past few years, UTV and Walt Disney have had a growing business association. Disney had bought out 'HUNGAMA TV' India's first Hindi language children's channel. The channel leveraged UTV's in-house production capabilities to create most of the content on Hungama TV.
Walt Disney is the world's second largest media house, that also owns ESPN. However, Walt Disney is best known for its children's programming. In India's Walt Disney has been a late entrant into the children's TV channel business. Turner had established a Vice like grip in the children's channel market in India, having established itself, more than 10 years earlier. Disney had in the past decided that it would only enter the Indian market, after Pay TV addressability was introduced. That was a strategic mistake, that still haunts it. Infact, UTV's indigenously created Hungama TV established itself as the number 3 children's channel, after Turner's Cartoon Network & Pogo. This was despite Walt Disney's 'TOONS' and 'Movie' channels, launched in India. At that time, UTV did a lot of dubbing of Disney content into Hindi, for Walt Disney. Desperate to establish a stronger presence in the Indian market, Disney bought out Hungama TV.
