KOLKATA: Telenor Group’s ambition of becoming a pan-India mobile services powerhouse has been stymied for now as the Norwegian company is yet to receive 2G airwaves from the department of telecom (DoT) in key cities across four telecom zones.

Telenor, which launched services in India last December under the Uninor brand, has decided to indefinitely defer operations in Rajasthan, Jammu & Kashmir, Assam and the seven north-eastern states as a result, said a top executive of Unitech Wireless, the joint venture between Telenor and Unitech Group.

“We will be unable to roll out services as we only have part-spectrum in these locations,” said Unitech Wireless corporate affairs executive vice-president Rajiv Bawa, adding that the company will focus on zones where spectrum is in place.
