Yes it is mandatory for validity extension. I have zero talk time on my Bsnl sim and only keep extending it for my iPad. I use data recharge when I need, since I can't make or receive calls on it anyway.
It finally happened. Validity expired and there is no incoming/outgoing. The balance amount is still there. Tried the bsnl portal but of no use.
What should i do now?

It worked for me, just choose the right plan while extending. Also be patient on the portal pages, takes 3 minutes to load the plan detail. If this fails you can walk into the customer service center nearest to you.
