easier would be for the consumer to use a VPN service provider. question is... what is better? paying to airtel for voip data or paying for a vpn service to avoid paying airtel? 🙂

government is working on bringing these apps under regulation so it's not like these apps can get around these new charges by emulating non-voip activity for long even if they decide to something like that specifically for indian market.

I just hope it isn't lead to a redux of the whole FUP mess.

Trai has just shot the web in the face here in India , it is not a mater of voip it is about redefining how ISP;s operate , all isps all over the world have been trying to get something like this to work , just couple of months back some isp's in states wanted to users to pay more for netflix traffic , some isp's in E.U had tried to get some service providers like youtube, FB, whatapp, etc to pay a kinda of tax for using their B/W all of them were turned down , due thank fully strong net neutrality laws out there , here in India gawd help us.this is just the start of the things to come in future.

on side note they are just plain jealous that companies which are not even 5 years old are worth more , age old rivalry between new vs old what airtel is not realizing that there will NO voice calls in next ten years there will be only data calls !! and the govt if they support this then they encouraging a kinda of a chilling effect on future of software dev's in this country.

Opera is a proxy and it does not touch HTTPS traffic for a good reason, it is pretty much a man in the middle attack if they do that. But yeah there are free services out there for mobile devices.

Sad to see this happen. ISPs were (yes it is past-tense) just supposed to be the highway for data traffic to run on. It should not matter to them, what is being transmitted. Really sad. We hardly have any law around this. Next year by this time, we will embrace this, like we did with FUP.
