Do not believe the rumors so soon. Also, the phone would feature components that might not match even the previous generation model.

Jiofiber 150 Mbps
Ex: Airtel vFiber 24 Mbps
It's likely to be all the rage here if it actually launched.

Apple releasing anything low cost is unprecedented. Whatever the hardware it always comes with great service from Apple, that is more than enough for the people in US
Could it be the turning point where in the smart phones can be affordable.
Google nexus started it, iPhone may push it to new level...
Apple knows that if it doesnt release a low cost version, sooner or later it will be wiped out by Androids.

lol. Apple does have some cheap products. apple tv is quite cheap even when compared to competition. ipod shuffle has been quite affordably priced as well.
phones are a different matter. iPhones and ipads are currently responsible for most of their profits. selling a cheap iPhone might take some sales away from androids, but it also hurts their bottomline.
maybe they can take on the nexus by launching a crappier version of iphone against the nexus and other android devices. internationally? probably not. iphone 4 might be a great buy at 20K after the exchange scheme, it is not a great buy for 27K which is what it is sold in india for.
anyhow. i would love to see them launch a 300 dollar iphone in the US market. it would be great. they would do what google has struggled to do with nexus devices. make unlocked devices popular in usa.
