Telstra, the Australian telecom major, is all set to commence operations in India, offering national long distance, international long distance and Internet services in India by March 2012, reports The Hindu. The company informed that it has acquired licenses to offer these services and is in the process of building infrastructure to roll them out in Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Pune. Thecompany will mainly focus on the enterprise segment and would offer a suite of connectivity and managed services, and enhanced in-country service centre support, according to another report(PTI).
Telstra Telecommunications, a JV company in which Telstra holds 74% stake while the rest is controlled by the Indian partner Microland, will operate the services. Microland acquired the licenses to run ISP, NLD and ILD services from the government of India.

According to senior Telstra execs, the company intends to invest in a global cable network which would connect to India and plans to have its cable landing stations in Chennai and Mumbai where it would built international gateways connecting into its international backbone network, which would offer customers direct routes into networks in Europe and Asia.
Earlier this year US telecom company Sprint Nextel had also announced plans to provide national long distance, international long distance,Internet services and managed network services in India, forming a JV with Persistent Systems, an outsourced software development firm. The deal is awaiting regulatory approval.
