Hey Karthik, do you get some commission on the sale of this product??? This is a portable DVD player which is very different from a PVR/DVR set top box!! Like I said earlier, you're offering oranges to people who want to buy apples. What's a portable DVD player gotta do with Tata Sky or Tata Sky+ ???

DVD recorders are not all a substitute for the PVR. IF anybody is not convinced, once you start using both you will realize the convenience of PVR. Those who own DVD recorders (even VCRs) know how many time they really used it for recording whereas PVR will be using it daily by those who own it. From my own experience I am convinced, now that PVR is worth investing.

I was wondering how to create and format more then 32GB Partition in FAT32 as XP and Vists does not support more then 32GB partition in FAT32. So, I searched on Microsoft website and found that this can be only done under Windows 98. So, even if we are able to access large partitions in XP & Vista better use Windows 98 for all features.

Limitations of the FAT32 File System in Windows XP

Bad news is all new computer hardware does not support Windows 98 🙁 So, if anyone have Windows 98 syatem might able to create and install 500GB HDD in TS+ STB. So, we require old Ghost to create image of 160 GB HDD and install the same on large HDD like 500 or more.

Hope this might help many 🙂

Anyways, thanks for all the information but, I do not see any fun increasing HDD as who have time to store and watch when we do not have time to watch 100% in day-to-day TV viewing?

Thera are n number of softwares available on the net which can format a large FAT32 drive..I have two HDDs of 500 Gb and 250 Gb in FAT 32 for my PS3 compatibility... you get a cd with the transcend HDD for this.

Anyway for upgrading this HDD you will need a special HDD of 3.5 inch SATA II with 3.0 Gbps transfer rate... The HDD itself will cost you about 10,000 INR for a 500 GB HDD and people who are cribbing about the 6000 upgrade to TS+ will never be able to afford it. But they don't know that they are getting a HDD of at least 3000 worth in it and the broadcom chips are not cheap either.

here are the details of the parts inside

Hynix Ram 4nos: Hynix

Broadcom Main Chip:
Broadcom Corporation - BCM7452 - AVC/MPEG-2/VC-1 HD Decode/SD Display SoC Solution for DVRs This is the closest match as thie chip inside s not listed by broadcom. Have requested info from their support will take time to get

Broadcom Secondary Chip
Broadcom Corporation - BCM4506 - Dual Advanced Modulation Satellite Receiver This is for the secondary tuner or for converting the MPEG2 to MPEG4 or Why it is still to be understood

Hard Drive:
WD AV 160 GB Hard Drives ( WD1600AVJS )

I hope this will give satisfaction to quite a few people:thumb:

Great R&D! Its really nice that you spent so much of your personal time and shared this with others. Its a good learning for everyone here. I wanted to understand the use of USB, Modem and Ethernet ports at the back side of Tata Sky+ STB. Are these functional now? If not, then what will be these used for? For example, can I plug in a Pen Drive to the USB? Thanks once again Chetan.

None of these are functional as of now.

This is information I picked from Sky Hacks and found it works to setup a new disk or to access the installation channels.

While on any channel, press [organizer] on the remote
2. Then select system setup a
3. Now on the remote press [0] [1] and then [select]
4. You will now be presented with a hidden menu that is used by engineers to set up your system

This gives access to
1. formatting the disk
2. setup new channels
3. LNB access channels
4. Modem Seup
5. Remote TV.
6. RF Out Setting - This can be used to setup a second TV

I believe format disk should allow setup of a new disk - here is an faq for adding bigger disks.

I did not see any way of transferring content out of the box. The usb is future use in the sky boxes as well. I think it is a standard feature of the box manufacturers.
