So, the government is now targeting newspapers for not being supportive enough?

Aditya Sinha: Ambika Soni’s adventures in arm-twisting - Analysis - DNA

We advised ad-sales to seek an appointment with Soni. True, meeting a minister — even for journalists — is not an easy thing, but it was the only concrete step we could think of (I’m not much of a backroom-journalist). It was a pleasant surprise when the ad-sales executives immediately got a slot to meet the minister.

Soni was pleasant enough. She told our guys she was unaware of any DAVP action; but in any case the government was rationalizing the flow of ads to English and language newspapers.

Her body language, according to the ad-sales team, suggested otherwise. And then, during a general chat about the newspaper, she came to the point: she said that DNA ought to look at its coverage over the past few weeks and introspect.

The past few weeks was of course dominated by Anna Hazare’s agitation, arrest and fast. From the beginning DNA felt this to be an important event; it was covered robustly and splashed prominently, with an occasional sharp headline. The government did not cover itself with glory in handling the agitation, and once it was over it was said that the Congress party was angry with the media, particularly TV news channels, blaming the media for the frenzy that was whipped up.

Soni’s statement led us to infer that our Anna Hazare coverage was being punished by a suspension of government ads, and that Soni met our ad executives just to ensure the point was driven home.

Our media may be mired in a few controversies and befuddled on important issues, but it has a reasonably free hand at reporting the truth. Its strength lies in privately funded institutions which, unlike party or national mouthpieces, are free to analyse both sides of the coin and praise as well as criticize . It would be very unwise of the congress to try to suppress the news elements which are unfavorable towards it by arm twist and carrot baiting. To blackmail a leading newspaper into submission isnt a very well thought out plan. And i would think every party would know this. And why only target DNA?Indian politics seems to getting very strange, with politicians doing exactly what it takes to anger the people. Usually the less attention they attract, the longer they can continue to skim and stash. But it seems they are trying harder to stay in the limelight with negative publicity.

For anyone who cared to listen to, Niira Radia tapes released by Outlook magazine proved it beyond doubt that editors and owners of CNN-IBN, NDTV, Hindustan Times, Times of India and Economic Times among others are DALALS of Congress and DMK. In any other democracy, people like Barkha Dutt, Vir Sanghvi etc. would have lost their jobs long ago. See the example of UK where a big tabloid "News of The World" was recently closed down after a scandal. That is the exact reason why the above mentioned media outlets are never tired of propaganda against Modi and Gujrat. It was also very clear in Niira Radia tapes how big corporates leverage their ad budgets to place positive "news" in the above mentioned media outlets.

And for a change, DNA was refreshingly very much critical of the Govt during the days of the movement. So its obvious, this kind of reaction wud have come! But its such a growing daily, that it cant be stopped by these kind of childish steps!

Everything is possible in Politics guys. Last nite only watched " Rajneeti " once again and felt the same. Politicians make media dance at their tunes. Those who accepts it make huge profits and those who don't would have fate like Mr J Dey. If media would have been working independently in India, they Killings and roiting of kashmiri pundits would have never been crushed and if People like Ambika Soni had performed her duty even 10 %, absurd shows like " Gajab Desh ki ajab Kahani " won't be aired on Television.

There's wisdom in investing in a propaganda machine like the indian media. Congress understood this investment perfectly even before BJP had realized what happened.

It is a symbiosis. However, neither side (party and media) like to make their links too obvious for fear of a backlash and alienation by people. So they feed as much as people can chew. Regional media however is a lot worse. Pretty much every state has its share of pro and anti (State) govt. channels.

What "nexus for ages"?The 24 hour news channels are the real game changers and they started appearing ONLY SINCE the last 15 years or so. Before that it used to be radio and DD1/DD2 news bulletins.
