Hey, I tried connecting to newsgroups using NNTP servers. I had my details right but could not connect. Since this was the first time i tried connecting to NNTP servers using Sify Broadband, I am not sure if the NNTP servers are not blocked or anything.

Anyone else has any ideas?

I got my userid from http://news.individual.net/ it worked when I was in faridabad on touchtel.

I thought you said NNTP worked for you ? I have been unable to get NNTP working - I have asked sify to unblock port 119 and the tech support guy actually followed up *5* times the same day. He actually called me back !! Unfortunately - they weren't able to get it working (after conferring with the head office at Chennai). The couldn't figure out why NNTP was not working - I know my settings are right, because the moment I switch to dial-up, I can get at the newsgroups.Other ports which I've requested unblocking were successfully unblocked.Haven't had the time to follow up since. If anyone knows what's up - please let us know.

yeah thats the port that comes in my nntp software. no one responds to my mail. i will try it again.

This doesn't actually solve your problems but here's something I thought you'd find interesting  http://www.grc.com/port_119.htm

hmm ... interesting.

However, I remember calling up customer support (at Chennai) and they said "we cannot open a request for 119 - becuase we are NOT blocking it; check your local CTO" .

I'll customer support again and maybe I'll get someone more in the "know" this time round.

I would like to confirm that  blocking the same is as per our standard
policy .This port is blocked for residential users using retail broadband
services.[/b]

They want me to buy corporate packs to access NNTP servers. This is really crossing the lines for me.

maybe next we would be seeing more services that they think consume bandwidth getting banned. ftp, game servers, torrents... maybe http protocols as well.what is broadband really for? pay us money. check your mail. disconnect. thank you. hope you had fun surfing with sify broadband.

This is really terrible. How can an ISP block our availing of some innocuous services. Newsgroups are one of the first services that were started on the internet. An Internet Service Provider blocking access to it is very condemnable.

You might want to consult this for a possible solution/workaround http://www.newzbot.com/feedback.php?opt=vi...d=653&topicid=0.
Can you believe it, I entered "port 119" on Google to know more about it and found this post on the very first spot about someone complaining that his port 119 is blocked, and a possible solution to it given.

Hope things work for you.

I am having the same problem, i.e., inability to access newsgroups through Outlook Express.
Sify's "technical" help is useless. When I complained to SIFY, they initially gave me detailed UNNECESSARY, irrelevant instructions on how to configure OE for mail. After some protracted correspondence, they frinally told me they "don't support newsgroups". I have asked whether they have blocked port 119, but there has been no reply.
There must be a legal remedy for all this - like consumer courts. If someone knows, please inform me. The point is, the consumer is not told beforehand that he or she cannot access newsgroups.

wow! you just picked out a thread which was only 2 and a half years old!
your name suits you well. were you so lazy to post it then?? 😛 😛
