Tatas will have leading presence in a sector of industry where they were totally absent a few years back.
It would not have been possible alone. When they've gained valuable experience over the next few years, I am sure they will try n buy out Sky's smaller 20% stake, or atleast be more involved in the decision making processes. Look at what they are doing in other other sectors - steel, bought CORUS, Heavy vehicles in S Korea, and on and on. They are going Multinational in every sector they are already in.
Far from being banned, this partnership is actually great for Indian Industry, Tatas and the Consumer too. I hope for hundreds more such (80-20) partnerships, in all sectors of industry.
Also, all this talk about banning this and banning that is really rather foolish in this age of globalization- it amounts to hitting onself with a ... , for if we ban another countries' company here, they will retaliate and ban a few of ours there, they will lose a few Rupees and we will lose a lot of Dollars. Go on a few more times like this and India will be back in the pre 1991 era of closed Nehruvian command ecoonmy, when India was firmly anchored in the in Doldrums. Remember your pay packets then. My Dad, a Doctor used to bring in 3000 bucks! Our Driver takes more than that today.
Also, there is this little thing called WTO, which India has so wisely signed, which forbids such unilateral acts of banning companies when YOU don't like how they work internally. QWERTY might do well to learn about ethics / civics and fair trade practices. How do you think we Indians would like it if the US Government decided to ban Wipro a majority stake holder in Net Sol Inc,
for similar reasons, and Wipro ends up losing the the Approx USD One Billion they invested in restructuring and equipment? Not fair is it? A country which does not have a sense of buisness ethics is doomed , not just economically but socially as well.
Look forward to a
Tata DTH service in EU or USA 5 years down the line!
