Sony Entertainment Television is likely to bag the telecast rights of the Twenty20 Champions League to be organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) this October.
According to sources, Sony may emerge as the favourite choice due to its successful liaison with the BCCI for the highly popular Indian Premier League (IPL) matches in April this year, for which it has the broadcast rights for the next ten years. Contrary to media reports that the broadcaster will be selected via bidding process, top sources said that the BCCI is already in the process of inking a deal with Sony for the next five years.
Lalit Modi, chairman and commissioner of IPL said, “They do not have the rights.” Kunal Dasgupta, CEO, Sony Entertainment Television could not be contacted, while Sneha Rajani, business head, Set Max declined to comment. Ratnakar Shetty, CEO, BCCI, said, “The Champions League involves four countries, Cricket Australia, England Cricket Board, Cricket South Africa and BCCI and so no one party can take any decision.” He also said all the decisions need to be in consortium with all the four cricket boards. Besides the telecast rights, BCCI will also scout for a title sponsor. Considering the involvement of four countries, it opens up the possibilities of a number of global brands to get associated with the Champions League. Media reports reveal that the telecast rights per match of the Twenty20 Champions League will be Rs 6 crore to Rs 10 crore. In total, the entire series, that will include 15 matches over 10 days, is expected to fetch over Rs 1,500 crore.
The Champions League will feature top two domestic sides from India, Australia, South Africa and England. Western Australia and Victoria from Australia, Rajasthan and Chennai from the IPL along with the Dolphins and Titans from the Pro20 in South Africa have already qualified. They will be joined by the two finalists from the English Twenty20 Cup. This time, the prize money is double than that given away in IPL and winners will take away $10 million. In the year 2007, Set Max was in the doldrums due to the untimely exit of the Indian cricket team from the World Cup. Sony took the risk and in consortium with World Sports Group, paid a whopping sum of $1.03 billion (around Rs 4,120 crore) for grabbing the telecast rights of IPL for ten years....
