problems with bsnl infrastructure
the other day i was talking with my uncle who is an rm with bsnl,he says that inspite of the physical transport layer is capable of supporting 2mbps for unlimited users(switches.lines etc).there are two problems
1)the servers-they suck-believe it or not i found an 1995 model ibm server at my exchange which the tech guys say is for dataone service.
2)bsnl inspite of being our national carrier has no global gateway,their dias is defunct so they hav to connect overseas thru vsnl gias,bharti or flag(reliance) at exorbitant rates.
these problems were to be solved this budget but it did not happen[/b]

It could be LDAP server used for storing account info, BRAS server used for storing last-mile routing related info [things like up/down speed for line] etc etc.

I never thought of BRAS at an 'exchange'..

BRAS is not at every exchange.Typically every exchange would have one DSLAM, and a BRAS would integrate multiple DLSAMs. In Bombay, BRAS server at Goregaon serves Malad, Kandivali exchanges.

^ yes it depends on how they have deployed ADSL..in Delhi all BRAS's are at one place but Mumbai has distributed BRAS setup..
