Read Sify's document on securing your PC on their site www.sifybroadband.com :p. It's called "Prevent PC sharing".

ya just disable file and printer sharing in ur lan properties and use a good firewall like zone in the highest settings

the problem is there if u have setup a local lan. u cannot disable file sharing in that case coz it disables them for u as well... better idea is to use a password for your user logins and disable guest sharing.

use any free firewall and make a rule to block incoming connection to ports 135-139,445,1025-1026,500 Tcp as well as udp ( all udp not needed but this ports are of no use anyway) from sify network ..if u dont want to run firewall(if u find it annoying) then start-->run-->secpol.msc and make new policy in ip security policies to block icmp ( if u want to ) as weelll as above ports and u will be safe enough if u dont run any server programs.......best thing about ipsec is it doesnt use any extra memory bcoz its service is already kept running even if u dont enable it ( u can disable of u want) . This is good for less config pc's for win2k Disable $ sharesDisable DCOMDisable NETBIOSDisable netbios name exposingthis arent needed if u block above ports anyway

Ya don't use IE until u need it badly. Use some nice antivirus software like kaspersky and a decent firewall like mcafee or zonealarm. Make sure in the firewall do the setting to "do not trust my lan" . If u wanna add access to any lan pc than u can add tht ip in the allowed list. It works this way in mcafee but not sure abt zonealarm.

it uses tcp ports above 1024 but not exactly port 1025 because it is resetved for DCOM and already blocked by most of isp's .. first 1025 ports are reserved for random usage by programs mostly so for some prog its said that it uses ports above 1024 but that doesnt mean port 1025 only :)
