Hey Friends I'm Ridam and here is my problem..........

I have a BSNL 500 home plan....and I use or have been trying to use a lot of torrent softwares........but the speeds have been about 20-40 kilobytes per second.............
where as when using my download manager..the speeds are always in 120-140 Kilobytes per second.......and sometimes even 200 Kilobytes per second.....

I know how to port forward( using hyperterminal)........but the problem is I am not able to as
in PPPOE mode( i.e connection occurs as soon as modem is turned on)
BSNL automatically assigns a dynamic IP...each time I connect to the net....
Could you please tell me how to setup a static IP address in PPPOE mode.....
from a dynamic IP address.....

Changing to Bridge mode is not an option as I prefer PPPOE mode due to
firewall provided automatically by BSNL and much more security...
and last time when I was in BRIDGE mode.......I had 140 viruses in my computer!!! but now I have none....so

MY CONFIGURATIONS:
windows 98 SE
Siemens SL2_141 wireless type 2 modem
home 500 plan
D-Link DFE 520-X PCI fast ethernet adapter
PPPOE mode( dynamically assigned IP)

please tell me how to setup a static IP address from dynamic in PPPOE mode in BSNL broadband

🙁😛

disable dhcp in your Siemens SL2_141 wireless type 2 modem
and give an ip in your pc ! so that you give ip (192.168.1.2, 255.255.255.0,192.168.1.1 as ip, subnet, gateway respectively in pc)

by logging in to http://192.168.1.1

first of all to port forward you don't need a static IP from BSNL.the IP assigned to your computer by modem must be static(something like 192.168.x.x) & not the IP provided by BSNL to your modem(something like 117.x.x.x or 59.x.x.x).

go to your LAN TCP/IP properties & in there select the option"use the following IP address & then enter the address,say,192.168.1.10.then using port forward settings forward the required ports to this IP(192.168.1.10)in this example.

thanx appus, whitestar, superprash, and essbebe

I 've finally managed to port forward!! hurray:thumbsup::yahoo:

I just entered the IP address shown by "IPCONFIG"

and forwarded the port and it is showing " OK" in Utorrent port checker
page with a green signal.......🙂

although my external IP address was always changing and it is like
117.194.224.xx where xx is any two digit number......

the IP shown by IPCONFIG is always static and never changes and
it is like 192.168.1.x where x is a specific number.....

I'm not saying the number...anywayz dont mind.

thnx frds.

It will take time for newbies to get/understand the motto/purpose of IBF.
No idea whether Portforward.com help was taken.
Usually PF web site allots "StaticIP" in the range 192.168.1.100 to 253.
I only feel sad , that this secret IP number of @ridam is not available to other BB/torrent users. No harm done as I am sure you/and other torrent users will be there to help , and share the solutions , without any restriction.
Luckily i don't need it !

hey essebebe.....I know that computer's are alloted IP addresses from192.168.1.2--192.168.1.254but I thought I should not disclose..... anyway perhaps every other person has the same IP as me for their computer....... in all this hacking and stuff going on perhaps only the open port number and external IP matter...but I thought that the Internal IP was not to be disclosed...........better safe than sorry......... coz not everyone is out to help.....😗😛

@/members/ridam/ : Sorry. Nothing personal.
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
C:\Documents and Settings\xxx>ipconfig
Windows IP Configuration
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.3
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
This is same for almost everyone usually . Local LAN.
The dynamic IP is allotted by ISP . Example mine now Airtel 122.164.52.162
Again it will change. This is the IP normaly people mask
Now you go to Free Product Demo | IP2Location?
and type it and locate me , in Chennai.
Your IP check here.
What Is My IP Address? - Lookup IP, Hide IP, Change IP, Trace IP and more...
I also don't not know anything , and learning from the posts here and share it with
others.

Select your modem BSNL advises you to use 192.168.1.10 etc !

Para two : probably you followed @appus post. and @/members/whitestar_999/ post.

Off thread:I had 140 viruses in my computer!
Which is the Antivirus program you use ? Normally with even one or two viruses , the system goes haywire. 140 viruses detected is a record.

better safe than sorry

Very true!! 😀 ..Although posting internal ip isnt any harm.I like your attitude , always stay safe, dont post email ids, phone nos etc . Users here may not do anything but people who land up on this page through google etc may!!!

no essebebe....
i didn't follow appus's suggestion
yup whitestar did point to me one thing that you dont need static IP
for port-forwarding........and that was really helpful.

I didn't even disable DHCP!!!!!
its enabled with start IP address as 192.168.1.2 and end IP as 192.168.1.254

but still I have done portforwardingsuccessfully.....😀
and everytime I check with IPCONFIG
my IP address shown is 192.168.1.2!!!!!!!!
I dont know why it is always that..coz it should change as DHCP is enabled.!!!

When I checked and found to have 140 viruses........it was with
AVG 7 free edition..........

Now I use AVAST ANTIVIRUS 4.8 HOME EDITION.........

what antivirus do you use?? and do you advise me to install any personal firewall.........when there already is a firewall supplied by BSNL??

do I need any more security for my open port???

I dont think so.......coz It's impossible to knwo a port out of about 60000!!

and my IP is always changing........what do u think?

YUP your right superprash..........

but I thought hard and decided to post my internal IP
it doesn't matter........and I have also changed that now......

Congratulations ridam on successfull port forwarding....Actually its not needed to disable DHCP in order to port forward coz when ever the router boots up,it assigns ip address from the DHCP pool and in most cases this is done based on the interface,ie, for example if you use a wifi enabled router, the first priority will be to the directly connected system and then only to wireless network. So the first ip will be assigned to the pc that is directly connected to router and then only it assigns remaining to wifi enable pc's. And this is regarding your private IP....

There are 2 kinds ip addresses public ip addresses and private ip addresses, public ip addresses are those ip addresses which can be publicly routed(example internet) and private ip's are those ip's that cannot be publicly routed(example a LAN),so if a router is in PPPoE mode rather than bridge mode,it will have 2 network, one will be routed to internet and other to LAN,and wat you see on your system is your LAN ip and wat you see on the routers WAN interface is the WAN ip that is assigned by your isp.

Public IP's cant be changed by user, while we can change private ip address. This method of mapping public IP to Private IP address is known as NAT(Network Address Translation),this also provides more security than unNATed network since an outsider will not be able to access the pc or computer inside this NATed environment....and for this purpose only we are using port forwarding....I think i would have confused you by telling all these things...Sorry if I did...

I dont know much about Antivirus softwares but if you are looking for an efficient Antivirus s/w then you can go for kaspersky or nod32....but I use symantec antivirus, it has the same scan engine as that of norton antivirus and consumes less memory...
Hope this will find useful to you....
Have a nice time....

untill your computer's lan settings is not like this, dhcp will not assign any ip address, as ip address is manually configured

thanx Bobbythomas for providing with that info...........

although I knew the difference between private and public IP address........

that was really helpful.............

my modem is SL2_141 wireless type II modem......so it has that wifi thing you were talking about.......

but I dont think I can use Symantec......coz my OS is WINDOWS 98 SE.........

onlytest.........actually my computer's lan settings's are like that only!!!

whereas I use a fixed DNA server

IP address box is same as given in the snapshot>>.....ie no fixed IP's for lan........

still portforwarding works!!!😛
