Is a daily expenditure of Rs 31 enough to sustain a family of five in a city like Delhi and Mumbai? Country's top-most planning body, Planning Commission, says yes. In its affidavit filed in the Supreme Court, the panel quoting the Tendulkar Committee's recommendations said the urban poverty line is fixed at an expenditure of Rs 4,284 per month while it is Rs 3,905 a month in rural areas. It means that the money is enough for a family of five to incur expenses on health, food and education. A family spending more would fall in the above poverty line (APL) category.

10,000 would be enough for Lalu sir. Most others would probably be able to manage in much less. Our unmarried MPs should get less than 1000 bucks for example especially if they have other earning members in the family.

Each member of planning commission should be given Rs 4284 and ask to run their expenses, lets see how they manage...

This is how they came to this figure. Poor people eat what? 1 cup tea, 1 parle g biscuit per day.

Cheapest chai = 2Rs. Parle G (swaad bhare / shakti bhare - enough for workers) = 4Rs

6Rs per person = 30Rs per family.

Add 1Re as correction factor.

So 31 Rs/day is enough for family of 5.

If you earn 32 Rs a day then YOU ARE NOT BELOW POVERTY LINE!!

god damm...4284 may be just runnable enough for a family of three but definitely not 5. This planning commission's people have kept the 4.2k figure high in respective terms to look rosy but gave it to run a family of five.!! moronsGod knows when will India will really be able to reduce its poverty. 2015 poverty goals seem too unrealistic now which is 7 crore or less than 6% whereas now it is as high as 40-50%. u go to any world forum and start to write about India great run the very next second u get bombarded '80% your country earns less than 2$' and all such crap but true stuff. At least give me a chance to counter that claim but not by artificially reducing levels.

Disgusting. Maybe this is based on the pocket money they give their kids. It might be enough for people who don't eat anything except rice and the occasional chapati or need a roof over their head. Worse for those who want luxuries like power or a phone or to travel on a bus to their employer (assuming they aren't a live-in maid or otherwise live within walking distance of their workplace).Go the whole hog: don't just make them live on salaries of Rs4.2k themselves, but strip all benefits as well, including subsidized housing/phone/power/etc. And make them clean my chaddis.

Now how did they come up with this number of five ?

Yes, it needs to be higher, and also, needs to be calculated on a city to city basis, because,
What may be barely enough for living in Bombay would give you a decent life in say, Udupi.
