If anyone's looking for a solution to the original problem, here's what I tried (and it did work):
- live boot into any OS (I tried it on fedora) that has a desktop environment and has a web browser (so not pfSense) on the same machine where you've installed pfSense.
- go to selfcare.actcorp.in and login with your credentials.
- boot into pfSense and it should probably work now.
