New segments, products to drive Dish TV expansion

Operator Targets 8 Million User Mark By 2010-11

DTH operator Dish TV is in the process of restructuring the company and expanding its sales and service operations. The company is also looking at tapping several new consumer segments by launching new products. Dish TV is targeting the 8 million subscriber mark by 2010-11.
Dish TV CEO Arun K Kapoor said, “We are in the process of re-structuring our company. We have divided the country into seven zones and are in the process of expanding our sales and service network to be able to reach out to a larger subscriber base.” The company currently has an estimated subscriber base of 2.7 million.
The company is also betting big on new products in 2008. The DTH operator has already launched new applications where the DTH set top box can be attached with a computer and the consumer can watch live television on the computer. In addition the company is also looking to aggressivly launch products where a set top box can be attached with the car to be able to watch live television while travelling. “Products like these have helped us develop new consumer segments like students and viewers in offices. In fact our tieup with Kingfisher airline has helped us reach out to people travelling by air,” he said.
Kapoor added that he considers another application very important through which consumers can record their favourite programmes and watch them later. “I expect Digital Video Recorders through our set-top box alone would contribute nearly 10% to our overall business,” he said.
Banking on ample transponder space, the company expects to offer 300-400 channels by 2010-11. “We are in the process of offering about 225 channels which is likely to go up by nearly 300-400 by 2010-11:thumbsup:. I think 2010 is the inflection point for DTH to boom and we expect the subscriber base to increase to 8 million by 2011,” he added.
The company also expects to be EBIDTA positive by 2008-09 and has already announced investments of Rs 1,100 crore. Dish TV recently raised Rs 250 crore by diluting a little less than 5% to Indivision Capital, the private equity arm of Kishor Biyani’s Future Group.
