Full-play media conglomerate Network18 launched its 24-hour home shopping channel ‘HomeShop18' in Hyderabad on Wednesday.

\"Hyderabad has shown tremendous response during the 12-month-long pilot phase of HomeShop18. Of the 1,600 cities where the channel distributed products, Hyderabad alone has contributed 5 per cent to the total Indiawide sales figure,\" Sundeep Malhotra, chief executive officer of HomeShop18, told mediapersons here.

Launched on April 9, 2008, in around 250 smaller cities, the channel plans to expand its reach to 750 cities before entering other major metros. It is currently witnessing Rs 7 crore worth of transactions a month.

Adopting a concept of converting the television reach — which at present is 100 million viewers in the country — into a distribution platform, the channel will offer about 10,000 products from over 200 brands in categories that include consumer electronics, computers, jewellery, books and travel packages.

\"Going forward, we will be selling insurance products on our channel in partnership with players like Reliance, besides expanding our categories to food products in a tie-up with ITC's Kitchen of India,\" Malhotra said.

Stating that the channel is being aired through cable and satellite at the moment, he said the company was looking at telecasting programmes through the DTH platform as well. \"We have not yet approached any DTH operator,\" he said.

HomeShop18 has a call centre with multi-lingual capabilities including English, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Gujarati, Marathi and Punjabi. The centre has the capacity to handle 300 calls per second and 60,000 calls a day. The channel reaches out to 80 million consumers nationally.
