Hi,I live in Nagpur, Maharashtra, India. I am willing to have 3G high speed internet connection in my home which can also be used in laptop while traveling. I want to have PREPAID plan, so that I can recharge it only when necessary. I am much concerned in the speed & availability, not much about the required amount of data, may be 500MB per month or some more will be used.I have some queries, if I buy the device (dongle) from Idea, reliance, tata, airtel etc, is it compulsory to use their service only? One of my friend suggested dongle make Huawei, which can accept any SIM. I am searching for a device that is 3G enabled & can accept any SIM.Secondly as the SIM card will be used in the USB dongle for data purpose only, will the free talktime offered will be wasted, or are there data only plans available at low cost. Can somebody suggest me proper device & service as per my need. Thanks

You have come to a right conclusion- get a pre paid Idea/Bsnl/Airtel/Voda /Docomo sim
+ enable 3G + recharge a 1 gb/2gb- 3G data pack
and renew /carry forward every 30 days with 100 mb /rs 100 pack (any unused data)

If you buy Huawei data card supplied by any operator it will be locked.

Flipkart/letsbuy sell factory fresh (never locked) 3.6/7.2 mbps data card.
but not Huawei (beetel,micromax,alcatel etc)

Buy from Ebay 7.2 mbps unlocked data card- Huawei E1750 / E 173 ( Rs 1100-1400) ......huawei e1750 | eBay

you can buy slightly used also cheaper.
There will no voice balance wasted as the only first time balance say rs 30 or so when you buy sim will there. Just keep the sim in data card and renew monthly pack or longer duration data pack as you seem fit.

Class dismissed - Going to watch " bad teacher" movie now .....

----------

First check signal strength of any or all 3G operators in a 3G phone /data card
or with a small 100 mb 3G data recharge pack in the place where you normally sit. ( though you say for travel use in laptop)

Dear obeliex,Thank you for your nice class. I hope you enjoyed or are enjoying the movie. After reading your post I just searched net for comparison between Huawei E1750 & E173. It seems then E173 is latest & better. So I will go for it. There are lot of Huawei models, what about them? For service, I think Tata Docomo will do well for me.By the way, how was the movie?

Forget 3.6 mbps data card.
6 months ago- 7.2 mbps cards were was rs 2000+.
Now due to competition by 3G operators ,they are subsdising for new pre paid with operator logo (unlocked by Ebay seller) .
factory fresh never locked data cards are closer to rs 1600-2000 but Huawei is not available. (only beetel, micromax, lava etc) sold in Flipkart/ letsbuy. but Huawei is the best with latest version of Media partner (up greadable from internet)

both are 7.2 mbps and both support ussd (to check balance),voice call, messages etc.
E 173 is a later model. but E1750 compatible for android wifi only tablets also.
E173 new price a bit higher. comparison..https://goo.gl/eFlpW
I will say -----use a cheaper card for 6 months . Huawei E1750 USB Modem 7.2 mbps 3G Data Card SuperPro 3G Pocket Internet | eBay
Later you can graduate to Huawei 21 mbps data card when some one like aircel/airtel subdisises it .( right now not less than rs 2400)

Thank you ulysses. So you mean though E173 is latest, E1750 is better.OK so they come in both locked & unlocked version. I will have to make sure whether it is unlocked or not if I buy it from any other source.
