Need help to connect wireless - BSNL Teracom modem / CompUSA Router / Windows Vista (Urgent)

Hello,

This is my last resort of finding some help to help me connect to internet.

ISP: BSNL

The gave me wired model Type 1 (TeraCom)

I already have CompUSA Wirelesss Broadband Router, which I am trying to use and make a wireless set up to connect the following devices
1. A Laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium SP2
2. A Laptop with Windows XP SP2
3. An Android 2.3 Mobile phone

I can directly connect the wire from modem to laptop and browse internet. But that is not a wireless network. But it proves that BSNL modem works. At this point BSNL technician washed off his hand.

I need your help to make this network Wireless by using the CompUSA wireless router.

I have done the following connection



1. The connection set up is as follows:
BSNL TeraCom Modem (LAN 1) ----- wired connection ----- COMPUSA Router (WAN)

2. I can connect to the wireless router by typing 192.168.2.1 in internet browser

Here are the details of wireless router settings

3. My computer shows "Local Only" connection (tcpip /config all pasted below)

4. Wireless Network Connection Properties has been set up "tcp/ip 4" to obtain automatically. Same with DNS

5. By TeraCom modem ip is 192.168.1.1. Since direct wired connection to this modem (bypassing the wireless router) succeeds, I am not providing the modem config details. Note I can access modem set up page 192.168.1.1 only when I connect directly (wired). If I use router, it can not locate the teracom modem. i.e. 192.168.1.1 returns page not found

Can you please help me to identify the problem? I just want to make use of this CompUSA Router instead of buying a new one.

The issue I think is that you need to set your Modem in bridge mode and only then the PPPOE will work from your wireless router. This is how I have configured mine. However, you can still make your modem dial to the internet and then you need to set your wireless router to Access Point (I think). Please read up a bit on this. It will surely work with the current router that you have.If you set your modem to bridge mode, you will not be able to access it via IP again because it will forward all requests direct to the router, it becomes a pass through. I have basic knowledge on this stuff, but have been able to configure my modem and routers.
 
How would you suggest to configure TeraCom Modem in bridge mode?
Are these the steps?

1. access 192.168.1.1 admin/admin
2. Configuration>Internet Connection>Add
3. Screen 1: "Please enter PVC Name, VPI and VCI numbers for the Internet connection which is provided by your ISP. "

5. Screen 3: Summary
Make sure that the settings below match the settings provided by your ISP.

6. Admin>Reboot>"Reboot From: Last">Click Reboot

7. After this is done, I connect the wires as follows
BSNL Splitter .... TeraCom Modem (LAN1)..... CompUSA Router (LAN1)

After this done, I would be able to access the modem via 192.168.1.1 and my router which is 192.168.2.1 and offcourse internet.

If this what you are claiming to be the solution. If yes, I will try it and confirm if that solves the issue

as i suspected the modem is actually a router and so you are trying to connect two routers together
to do this you need to setup the 2nd router differently and connect the ethernet connection to one of the LAN ports and not the internet/modem/wan port

If you set your ADSL router (one connected to your landline) to bridge mode, you wont be able to access it via IP. it becomes a dumb pass through. Then you should connect the RJ45 from it to your wireless routers WAN port. and Configure your wireless to PPPoE. Take a backup of the configuration and then proceed. Should work.

It was very tough, but could finally solve the issue wit your help.

This can be definitely a good white paper for people in my situation, i.e.

TeraCom Type 1 (Modem)....wired connection ...... CompUSA (Modem+Router)....wireless.... internet connected.

In addition, same behavior of disconnect was noticed today. I went to bed at around 12 AM and came back at 4:18 AM to find the connection is disconnected.

Kindly check and suggest possible cause and remedy for the issue. Thanks in advance.

I have this disconnect issue with my laptop which has a N network card. I dont have this problem with other devices or laptops with the B/G connectivity. I just open up the "Network and sharing center" and this resolves itself. Sometimes, I have to disable and enable the wireless adapter. It could also be some power saving mode due to which this can happen... Another reason could be your wireless router firmware needs updating. Also check if the wired connections are also dropping.
