The road to cable TV digitisation has not been a smooth one. With roughly 10 days remaining for the October 31, 2012 deadline, the installation of set top boxes (STBs) is on at a feverish pace in the four metros of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai.

Even as the installation figures quoted by the government vary widely with what the MSOs and LCOs say are the actual figures, the quality of the set top boxes available currently has come under the scanner.

Majority of the STBs are being imported from China and several LCOs have complained that the quality of these boxes is not up to the mark. They allege that these STBs are not certified by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). read more: exchange4media

Many people are complaining online about the shoddy set top boxes which the cable operators have installed. Most complaints are from Mumbai, followed by Delhi. I wonder if people in Chennai and Kolkata are facing the same problem. These set top boxes have signal disruptions due to which you cannot see the channels and sometimes it takes even 10-15 seconds to switch between the channels. Digitization deadline is just a day away. I think instead of taking a risk with cable operators, people should just go with quality dth operators like Tata Sky. Their set top box is of international standards so question of a shoddy device does not arise. Plus their packages are pretty good as well. Once you buy it, it would be installed within 24 hours with no hassles.
