Does look impressive...Regarding Ubuntu button.. Suspect it could some sort of Synchronization Symbol - As it looks the same.

Surface has been around for so long but out of reach for the average user. It was a technology ahead of its times when launched a few years back, and it continues to be so. Haven't ever seen it in India though!

@chromaniac ,

Its good that MS is pitting its best against iPad , But i dont get it , or i am missing something here ..

They have added a keyboard (magnectic) to thier touch based tablet..

cant we do the same with this ?

Amazon.com: Targus Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard for Tablets - iPad 2, the New iPad, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy AKB33US (Black): Electronics

again i am just curious ..

also that ubuntu button , i think is the share button , in charms.

should be helpful for many office going people . but for more hard core users ? I doubt . Tablet (as we spoke) is still useless IMO , doesnt fit(need) between a traditional pc/lpatop and a mobile.

they have put a bluetooth keyboard in the smartcover similar to what Apple offers on their ipad. so basically the cover is the supplementary keyboard. no extra baggage. this is different from regular bluetooth keyboard because you have to carry them separately. the cover which protects the display is the keyboard. of course, microsoft has a regular hardware keyboard also available. and it should work with third party ones as well. the point here is portability. you do not have to carry a keyboard with you. the cover does the job on the move. they stole the magnetic cover idea from apple but enhanced it and made it whole lot more useful. and yes, that button is for share. the icon just reminded me of ubuntu 🙂 as for pricing? we would find out later this year. microsoft promises that it would be competitive. i would imagine that it would be around the ipad. since this is their own branded product, they save the money on the licensing. hardwarewise of course, it is much superior to the ipad. display of course is no match for the retina display on the latest ipad.also. this product is no competition for the ipad itself. ipad has a specific market. microsoft of course has come out with a product that would suit PC users a whole lot more. they are offering a device that would run all metro applications. and they would have the proper office suite on it i believe. a more expensive model would feature the regular windows 8 which means you have a tablet that turns into a laptop on demand. it would be heavier of course. so users have two options... metro only version for cheap. full windows edition for a bit more. the closest apple has for the latter is the macbook air. so microsoft just has to beat the pricing of air to make it a worthy purchase. microsoft's aim would be to match or beat ipad with the RT edition of surface. and price the windows 8 edition lower than 1000 USD in the US market to take the market away from macbook air.this product is bad news for google android based tablets. why? because android still does not have decent apps for the tablet ecosystem. apple has that covered. and here is why we can find out why microsoft is pushing the metro ui on the desktop version of windows. they want metro on every windows 8 machine. to get more developers to code metro apps. this is a clever move to ensure that the RT users would not face a shortage of useful apps (which is what android tablet users are facing today). developers would know that any metro app they make would be accessible to all windows 8 users. if they had restricted metro to RT edition, fewer number of developers would have been interested in developing apps for the metro platform because the market would be very limited for them to target.

Wow finally something other than a Android that gets Chromanic EXCITED !!!!! 😀 ... My views on the other hand are a bit mixed... I have a deja vu feeling to the one I had during the Web OS announcement ... It looks so slick & so cool & I know I was looking forward to buying that device... But when it did reach the market it was disappointing to say the least... I would be quite excited if I can get a a Win8 based tablet(not a RT) for say around $500-800 range... But they seemed to mention that they are gonna price them competitively in the current Ultrabook range(someone correct me if they said something else)... Now thats a problem coz the current ultrabook market ranges from $800-$2000 with the average ultra book in the $1200-$1500 range... Anyway that I dont feel is their main problem... They main problem according to me the the delay between them displaying us this tech & them actually delivering this tech to us in our hands... So I am gonna see this wonderful tablet right now & cant get a hold of one until dec-jan(I think they mentioned somewhere the x86 based tablets wont be out until 3 months after the Win8 release)... This is where they should have really copied the Ipad... Launch a new product & then within a week or so have it available all around the world... The initial excitement of owning "The Latest & Greatest" product will always triumph showing off a cool product & then delivering it 6-8 months later... By then u dont know how the market scenario has changed...

the ultrabook comparable device would be the windows 8 based device with intel Ivy Bridge processors i believe. so you are talking a device comparable to the high end laptop devices. as for the launch window... windows 8 is not ready for launch right? 🙂 i guess the idea behind the event yesterday was to get developers excited for metro apps. i mean until now the reaction to windows 8 has been very mixed. there were too many doubts about the RT edition of Windows. microsoft has now clearly stated their intentions. they are serious about tablet pcs running winrt and developers now have real incentive to work on the apps for this platform.even if they could launch it today, it would not have worked well. simply because of the lack of apps. windows 8 consumer preview means that people have a working copy of windows 8 with metro in their hands. developers have the tools to create metro apps. microsoft is playing it right to ensure that there are going to be plenty of metro apps by the time windows 8 launches later this year. and people would be able to get everything they expect from a tablet on the day of the launch itself.

Now it gets very exciting in Tablet space.Android has been very disappointing for Tablets, I use one and I know that there are hardly any social media apps for tablets (its true!), leave alone general ones.The way it looks, its very comparable to any Apple product.My questions is, why not Google do something like this when they have acquired Motorola?Anyways MS is surprisingly doing well, first Kinect and now this product.But it will all end with who has better apps and MS shud attract developers after this event. If it doesnt get much dev support then its not going to help them much!

google has owned motorola for how many days? just a couple of weeks right? in any case, we are going to see the google nexus 7 tablet manufactured by Asus later this month. google's problem with tablet is software. hardware is not the problem. ipad was a big enough hassle. they just have a couple of months to fix the problem with android based tablets before windows rt comes and kick their buttocks for being lazy. as for ms attracting developers. are you seriously kidding me? the entire corporate market is owned by microsoft. and majority of the consumer market too. windows 8 is available as a public beta. developer tools are out. i can bet we are going to see more and more news about metro edition of popular apps (at least the one that have a purpose to be on metro).

as for pricing? we would find out later this year. microsoft promises that it would be competitive. i would imagine that it would be around the ipad. since this is their own branded product, they save the money on the licensing. hardwarewise of course, it is much superior to the ipad. display of course is no match for the retina display on the latest ipad.

Although they can save money on licensing costs, they are not going to undercut other Windows RT tablet manufactures. They sure don't want to ruin their relationship with OEM partners.

Wow! Simply Wow!(I still dont think I need tablet PC as of now, but whenever I need, this would be in consideration 🙂 )
