Openoffice is almost on verge of Shutdown. (no release since Oct 2016)

But it did show the power of Open source.

First Sun bought it then Sun was bought by Oracle.

Fearing dead end by Oracle buy out someone created Libreoffice.

Libreoffice grew so fast that eventually Oracle handed over Openoffice to Apache.

Similarly MySQL was also taken over by Oracle

But someone forked it into MariaDB and kept it alive!

mysql is still the primary database offered by practically all hosting companies. libreoffice on the other hand has replaced openoffice pretty much everywhere.

Yes because mysql is a server product. Replacing server product is not that easy especially when its running on millions of server.

Because all the auto-install tools need to have lots of changes. And it takes time to simply replace mysql with mariadb. Change ur scripts to use mariadb API instead of mysql etc.

Plus export whole database from mysql and import back to mariadb.

All of above takes lots of time.

What I meant is that... if ever oracle shuts down mysql ... we do have proper alternate.

Openoffice was easily replaced because all people had to do was uninstall openoffice and install libreoffice.

Few clicks and u r done.

I personally find WPS Office much better than Libre Office.

And I just realised that WPS office has been abandoned. lol.

You didn't read my post. The Linux version has been abandoned. Doesn't look like it's going to get updated.
