There are many more examples depending on how advanced your needs are. When adobe thinks its time to port PS to linux then we will have more confidence that the tide is turning.
If instead your uses are basic be they basic email, web browsing, word procesing, i certainly agree, linux is there already. What's even better is you don't need some fancy pc for this you can get away with a 2nd hand p2-p3 and have even less to worry about virus wise...(at least for the moment).
But then again if thats the kind of user you are, i think you are lucky.
having said that my guess is 80% of pc users dont do any more than that, if you leave out the gamers & power users. So there has always existed a niche for linux to get into but i guess the overwhelming tyranny of M$'s closed formats (or lock-in) is slowing it down. This more than anything prevents a mass migration away from m$. I can't atm see a way out of this as you are dealing with patents.
