The Left parties - CPI (M) and CPI, are all set to launch their own television channel in Tamil Nadu, following the footsteps of Dravidian parties. The lack of space in the existing channels, each with its own political affiliation, is the reason for the two parties to consider this route. The two already have their own dailies.
Though the Communists have attempted to be different from other parties they do not want to be left out of the TV channel race, where every major political party in the state has its own television channel.
\"We have plans to launch a television channel very soon. We have commenced the preliminary works, and want to give wider coverage to sociopolitical activities.\" C. Mahendran, state deputy secretary, CPI said.
Mahendran said that the party has decided to launch its own channel to take its viewpoint to the people and rake up important issues, which were not covered by other channels.
Launching a television channel is nothing new for the CPI (M) as its Kerala unit runs Kairali TV.
The party's central committee member W. R. Varada Rajan said, \"We have an idea of launching a Tamil channel but are yet to take a concrete decision.\" Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam has also announced launch of its own channel Captain TV in April next year.
Tamil Nadu set the trend of political parties launching their channels when the Maran brothers started Sun TV in 1993 with pro DMK affiliation. The AIADMK came up with its Jaya TV followed by PMK's Makkal TV, Congress leaders Thangka Balu's and H. Vasanth Kumar's Mega TV and Vasanth TV. After falling out with the Marans, Karunanidhi launched Kalaignar TV in September.
