Hi,

I don't see another FTTH thread even though BSNL is offering it too so I'll ask here.

It would be nice to know and perhaps sticky what sort of latency FTTH users are getting to popular FPS game servers in Asia. Latency is everything here.
A simple traceroute will do, but the output of pathping works too. This is best done late night to see the lowest latency.

I have listed some servers for Team Fortress 2, I can add Counter Strike GW too:

203.116.80.199:27016
111.118.186.226:27016
216.12.220.168:22075

The port numbers are there in case you want to check latency in Steam, else ignore it for traceroute.
If some of you could measure and post this with the city you are in, I would be grateful.

Code:

Sweet, can you run a traceroute to these 3 IPs and post your results?

203.116.80.199
111.118.186.226
216.12.220.168

😛 I don't have access to the connection as I'm not in gurgaon. Bottom line is ftth utilizes more efficient gateways and the ping times are quite good. Last I checked a tracert to google in chennai (from gurgaon) gave me 21ms.

Gah, the bit about him being away from his connection slipped me.Latency to google and speedtest are meaningless. It's the routing to the game server that determines latency and there's just one way to know, it's to check.I hope he's coming back soon so he can test it.

Gee, I should've added that on adsl the same tracert gives about 50ms.

Right, unfortunately I won't be home until the second week of December. Moreover, is ftth feasible at your place ?

EDIT

The tracert you've posted, what connection is it on ?

I called BSNL today to check FTTH feasibility, they said they need 2 days to get back to me. I live less than a Km from the Airtel and BSNL exchanges so it should be possible. That tracert is on a Tata Photon, latency gets worse in the day.December, whenever, I'd like to see how they're routing packets since anything to SE Asia will likely exit at Chennai and if you're in Gurgaon, I oughta get slightly better latency than you.

Proof of better routing by Airtel:

Code:
C:\Users\Apar>tracert 203.116.80.199Tracing route to 203.116.80.199 over a maximum of 30 hops 1 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms 192.168.1.222 2 44 ms 43 ms 42 ms ABTS-mum-Dynamic-001.72.169.122.airtelbroadband.in [122.169.72.1] 3 * * * Request timed out. 4 42 ms 43 ms 43 ms 125.18.13.137 5 75 ms 75 ms 74 ms 203.101.100.210 6 105 ms 106 ms 106 ms 203.116.9.161 7 103 ms 103 ms 104 ms vlan907-an-cat6k-tl1.starhub.net.sg [203.118.3.237] 8 104 ms 103 ms 104 ms gi8-1-0-an-ats-loc04.starhub.net.sg [203.118.7.11] 9 103 ms 103 ms 104 ms 203.116.80.199Trace complete.

Strykar, you ditched Airtel for FTTH right? I'm thinking of going the same way. If you're on FTTH, mind telling me what pings you're getting to Starhub/ GamersUN servers?

No, Airtel managed to provide me Internet access at the very end of my patience. That traceroute is from Airtel and they have better routing to Starhub than any ISP in India. They own the i2i submarine cable.

Perhaps someone with an FTTH line can share their traceroute with us, I'd love to see it.

Using tata indicom in Pune.

Airtel has much better routing, as Strykar said, 7-8 hops usually.

Considering from what I've heard, FTTH is on a different backbone as opposed to BSNL Broadband, one keeps wondering if it might offer better pings to said Starhub servers.

BTW, ola Stykar, Spaceman here 🙂

Ola Spaceman! LTNS.
I see Chicky on a bit on the .sg servers, where you at?

Playing as "space" since no one from cYs seems to be playing anymore.. heh, I did pocket you a coupla times on GoldDust, but generally play just a bit, too much raging happens when there are 5 snipers and 4 spies when trying to be BLU, you know...
