Mixed feelings from me here, this is one guy who has made a lot of sense over the other tradtional parties. It looks like he will still stay in charge, hope his party gets more support.

Jayaprakash Narayan to step down as Lok Satta president | The Hindu | Oct 2 2011

Special Correspondent

Lok Satta Party president Jayaprakash Narayan has reiterated his decision to make way for new leadership by not contesting for the State party president post.

In an interaction with media persons on the eve of fifth anniversary of Lok Satta Party here on Saturday, Dr. Jayaprakash Narayan said the time had come to demonstrate that the party did not revolve around certain individuals.

“This is not abdication but empowerment by giving space to others to become leaders and take charge,” he asserted.

He would continue to be the party's national president working for strengthening the platform to provide an alternative to traditional parties.

Dr.JP said the Lok Satta Party's strong agenda and commitment to clean politics had earned respect from large sections of people, both as a movement and as a party.

The Lok Satta had notched up victories -- be it creation of strong and independent anti-corruption mechanisms, fight on behalf of farmers which made Centre relax ban on rice exports.

Farmers in the State would benefit to the tune of Rs.3,000 crore this year with rice millers offering Rs.1,000 a paddy bag against Rs.700 earlier.

The party however, was not yet successful in fully strengthening its organisational structure as people still were to come out of feudal hold of traditional parties, he said. But the positive development was people who shunned politics for decades were now taking interest to bring in new political culture.

He said a national team would be formed to lead the party which was growing and contesting elections in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra.

Dr.JP would visit Germany next month to study the proportional representation system of elections there. The party would take lead to build a consensus on proportional representation, electoral reforms and make restriction on liquor consumption an important electoral plank in 2014 general elections.

Fifth anniversary

Mr.D.V.V.S.Varma, party working president said the fifth anniversary convention would be held at Ongole on October 8 and 9 and an action plan announced.

I see, this one is hard to call, was he asking for a bribe or a campaign contribution ?Was he the elected representative of that contituency ?If he was and depending on the request then there is some reasonable expectation that it can be resolved without any consideration being offered. Though this is entirely dependent on what the request was.I was impressed by how he spoke in the numerous news shows he's been on. His ideas are welcome and certainly had more insight than the piecemeal answers offered by the major parties spokesppl that were only interested in either promoting or covering their parties behind. Basic plot goes like thisBJP: say some shit about congressCong: debunk said statement and counter-attackrinse & repeat :(Hey, what about the issue ? nobody cares, its only about party and nothing else. Very rarely do you ever get any insight into the issue from any party spokesperson. Its always about hijacking the issue to promote party lines and junkiing the opposition. He was the one that produced that spreadsheet of LS MLA with charges, tho he released that list AFTER the 2009 elections rather than BEFORE. 30% have charges on them but only 5% have serious charges. But the point is nobody have ever been convicted of anything so these are just charges that others have on these people.

Yup. He is from Kukatpally, JP is the sitting MLA now. My friend asked help for something genuine (could not recollect) and he was shocked when he asked about money. But still he is a lot better than the so called political leaders. Being in a small party u may need money some way or the other...
