This was done in November and was in the news as well. It’s fairly common with new medicines since it’s impossible to know the expiry date at the time of creation.
The extension given by the central drugs standard control organisation (CDSCO) means that the expiration date of the vaccine, has been increased from the date of manufacturing, therefore reducing the risk of vaccine wastage.
But didn't the CDSCO came up with 6 months window for covaxin. I mean how can you extend the window when you have determined the time frame to be 6 months. A normal person would see nothing more than "preventing wastage of vaccine."
A bit of clarity in simple terms would definitely help a lot.
It would be nearly impossible to know how long the formulation remains stable and effective when it’s created so the 6 months was precautionary. If they observe after 6 months that the formulation is still stable and effective, it’s extended. That’s how ‘expiry’ dates for medicines are determined
