Indian Government accrues INR 1.78 bn from DTH

Government revenue amounting to INR1.78 billion has been earned from the licence fees extracted from India’s direct to home (DTH) satellite TV players during 2010-2011.According to Indiantelevision.com, in 2010 the six private DTH licensees – Dish TV, Tata Star, Sun Direct, Airtel Digital TV, Reliance Digital TV, and Videocon d2h – paid a combined figure of INR 1.26 billion.
In the previous year, 2008-2009 – which then included just four private DTH platforms - the Indian Government reportedly, raised INR 893 million. At that point, Bharti Telemedia (operators of Airtel Digital TV) and Bharat Business Channel (Videocon d2h) had not launched their satellite TV services.
The DTH market players were all required to pay a one-time entry fee of INR 100 million, in addition to the annual licence fee.
Over the past three financial years, Dish TV has paid a total of INR1.5 billion in licence fees, while rivals Tata Sky paid INR1.48 billion; Sun Direct paid INR 729.87 million; Reliance Digital TV paid INR 207.29 million; Airtel Digital TV paid INR 359.5 million; and Videocon d2h paid INR 2.01 million.
