i think u get a:\ prompt and no other drive because u might be using windows 98 startup disk and ur hd's may have ntfs partitions . win98 command interpreter cant read ntfs drives .

True, but atleast he shud have been able to read the CD-ROM drive.Hey use a proper win98se or WinME boot-disk (maybe current one is win95, that wont support cd drive).

I had created Boot Images of some popular OS's long time back using a software called BOOTMAGE. After going thro this post I thot I cud share this. Im providing D-Link 4 Boot Images (.img files) 4 d same OS's in a zipped file. As mentioned previously in this post just create a CD in Nero 4 a specific OS & point 2 d desired Boot Image file from d link below.

Download Popular Boot Images

bt u r forgetting 1 imp file : smartdrv.exe .......... which is not included in normal boot cd .........

Rather than make a bootdisk yourself:

Go to http://www.bootdisk.com and download the image --> http://1gighost.net/fantasy/boot98se.exe
The advantage of this image over a home made bootable floppy is that it automatically loads all CD/DVD drives and makes them accessible in DOS which can be critical. When you run the file it asks prompts you for a floppy to format & make bootable.

Nero has a 'Make a Bootable Disk' option under the 'Data' category. It's the same as making a data CD except it prompts you for a bootable floppy. You can write as many DOS utilities on the CD as you like coz the CD will be accessible in DOS. It even gives you an option to load DOS without loading the CD drives in case you want quick DOS access without waiting for the CD/DVD drives to load.
