I am still unsure how is speed measured. I have heard that some isp talk of 48 kbps and actually they get 12 kbps. I have 96 kbps of sify and get 11.7 kbps avg download speed. I also heard that you have to divide the number by 8 to get actual download speed. ie. if you have 64 kbps u will land up of 8 kbps download speed of sify and is u have 128 kbps plan u shall get around 16 kbps. I am totally confused. Also if I buy 128 kbps should i really get a speed of 128 kbps? or it will be 16 kbps? Can you guys throw some lights to the real speed calculations.

Haha..... u are totally confused man.Seekbps means kilobits per secondKBps KiloBytes per second1 bit=8 bytesSo 128 kbps=16KBpsand 96 kbps=12KBpsand 256 kbps=32 KBpsand so on.......so kbps and KBps are two diff units to measure same parameter

I wonder y they started advertising in Kbps rather than making life less confusing and advertise KBps directly... no strings attached, no multipliers with 8 attached!

Because all internet services are always advertised/rated in (kilo/mega)bits per seconds.

damn idiots. modems used to confuse people coz they thought they were supposed to get 33/56 KBps. we do not get that on today's broadband connections ;)

Modems had more confusing speed calulations. Sometimes it shall say 115000 , sometimes it shall say 57800 sometimes 33.6 sometimes 41.2 sometimes 33600 sometimes 28800. Those old days were confusing and no one had option to fight with ISP or telephone company as there was no choice of ISP nor telephone.

Nothing confusing about it. Modem speeds have always been rated in bits per second. If you saw a 2 digit rating it meant add a "kilo" to it and if you saw a 3-4 digit one it just meant bits per sec. These are fundamental things.
