I have a relatively old Seagate 1TB HDD. It seems to be giving me troubles today. Windows' own scan seems to show that everything is well. But I guess I should get a new unit and recover whatever data is possible. So, what I basically need is a suggestion for a 7200RPM drive. Internal. 2TB or 3TB capacity.

Bought a 2tb internal a couple of months ago from Nehru place for 6300. It was 5400 rpm WD caviar green. Seagate used to give 5 years warranty. Is it older than that?

7200 RPM drives are seriously worth the extra money. i am also considering a hybrid drive if i can find a good deal. 5400RPM drives are no fun.

right. for a nas, these drives are fine. i would probably be using this new drive as the test bed for windows 8 so that i do not mess up my existing windows 7 installation.

coz i would be purchasing the upgrade edition. not a retail edition. so i would have to upgrade from an existing installation. i have an old vista license lying unused. would be using that to upgrade to windows 8 to see if i can move on to it full time!

Talking of vista, read yesterday that OSX has overtaken vista as the third most popular OS. I wonder what took them so long. Also read that Win 7 has also overtaken xp.

right. i see very few people on vista these days. i do not see any point. either stick with windows xp or move to windows 7. all other versions are not worth using full time.

though i never had any issues with vista. it worked wonderfully for me. windows 7 is just a whole lot more refined. i guess windows 8 is going to be the same... microsoft would fix up the crap in the next edition which would probably become more widely adopted.

at least statcounter does not reveal if os x has overtaken vista. maybe in the us market. globally Apple does not really have much to show with their os x platform. ios on the other hand? 😀 it would probably become a major operating system on its own fighting it out with desktop platforms.

it seems to be running fine at the moment. but i guess it is time to have a larger drive just for safety's sake. was planning to buy one when windows 8 was releasing anyways.

would check out the tools from seagate just to be sure though. thanks!

in any case, i would probably be buying it from my hardware dealer. easier to deal with warranty replacements. i was more seeking about models that i need him to fetch for me!

now i am scared.

Prices & warranty are confusing right now , they keep reducing the warranty period , there are just two brands to chose from Seagate & Western Digital , I never buy western digital , they have bad service in India RMA issues .

yeah i know. i would probably buy another one of seagate barracuda 7200RPM drive. or a hybrid if there is a good model available in the market.i understand seagate now has the shittiest warranties. but i never really had any issues with them and probably would stick to them. 😕
