for a freelancer working from home

You dont need GST if your turn over (income in ur case) is < 20 lakhs.

But its better to get the number anyway because many companies now avoid non-GST companies / freelancer

Biggest side effect is that you will have to file lots of returns every year. (atleast 17)

Getting GST number is now very easy. Follow this:
https://www.gst.gov.in/help/enrollmentwithgst

You have to fill an online form - upload documents and you should get your number in few days or weeks.

Try filling up the form (dont submit it)... It will automatically show documents you need.

Unless you have specific reason to get GST number - you probably should not take one.

For example
  1. Rejection of contract due to non-GST
  2. Your work falls under compulsory GST
Because its crazy keeping accounts (you have to maintain different accounts for different type of dealers - IGST, CGST, Non-GST, composition dealers) and filing the GST 3B returns every month. Quarterly GSTR1 returns. ITC 04 return for job work (if applicable). You also pay late fees if you file late.

In future GSTR 2, 3, 9 would also be implemented.

All above is means additional expenses. CA charges 500 to 2000Rs per return. So expect about 20-30K extra as expense every year.
