Govt mulls proposal to limit number of guests at weddings - The Times of India

NEW DELHI: The Indian government is considering proposals to limit the number of guests allowed at weddings to reduce food wastage, an official told AFP on Tuesday.

Indian weddings are famous for their extravagance and a wave of new money in the country has led to ever more lavish marriage celebrations, often involving multi-cuisine buffets and hundreds, or even thousands, of guests.
"This is an absurd and obnoxious proposal," Prakash Javdekar, spokesman for the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), told the Mail Today newspaper, which ran the story on its front page.

Food minister KV Thomas calculated nearly 15 percent of all grain and vegetables in India was wasted through weddings and other social events, the paper said.

"We believe we can preserve foodgrains for the poor and needy of this country by restricting its use at such extravagant and luxurious social functions," Thomas was quoted as saying.

:ashamed: THis has to be the joke law of the year.Tell us how many people you can invite, next is how many people can sleep in a house.

WE are moving to a totalitarian system.

Next law: max of 1 bathroom per 10 people in a house, to avoid wastage of tiles and pipes

How about putting limits on the amount you can eat. Weight will be calculated before & after eating & if significant increase is there, you will be booked.

Would reduce ones toilet usage as well 😉

Such a potentially unpopular move attracted sharp criticism from the opposition, which slammed the government for failing to address serious issues such as food price inflation.

Haha, Government shud grab this opportunity and say, as food price inflation increase, people will invite less people and hence save food!
