maybe the simpler solution would be to buy another card for 150 bucks 🙄
[/b]

True,
And one should avoid any PCI card having VID of 0x1904 /silan/ , this company is nuts.
Unfortunately local market is full of products based on chipset from /silan/ in that price tag.
I would better stick to D-Link/INTEL based cards though its little pricey.

You need to have kernel-devel-2.6.15-1.2054_FC5 package installed in your system to get going with the module compilation.
BTW this kernel is old update it after you fixed your ethernet card using yum, for now grab the package from the given link, you would find same package in your FC5 cd/dvd also.
Install it using

rpm -Uvh /path-to-kernel-devel-rpm/kernel-devel-2.6.15-1.2054_FC5.i686.rpm

IN CASE IF YOU WANT TO GRAB THIS PACKAGE FROM NET
http://mirrors.kernel.org/fedora/core/5/i3...54_FC5.i686.rpm

Follow the rest of instructions given in another post.
[/b]

Hi Vichitra,
Thanks for the link, I have installed the kernel-devel-rpm, Now I could run the make.
When I make, I get a warning:
______________
*** Warning: "rtnl_trylock" [data/rtl8139too-19048139/8139too.ko] undefined!
make[1]: Leaving diectory '/usr/src/kernels/2.6.15-1.2054_FC5-i686'
--------------------

I thought, I'll ignore this warning and follow the next steps.
I folowed the next steps,
when I do modprobe 8139too I got the following error:
----------------------
FATAL: Error inserting 8139too (/lib/modules/2.6.15-1.2054_FC5/kernel/drivers/net/8239too.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
----------------------
I ran dmesg, at the end of the output I see
--------------
8139too: Unknown symbol rtnl_trylock
--------------

What should I do now?

Thanks,
Raffi

OOPS
That kernel-devel package is b0rked 😛, it don't have exported symbol rtnl_trylock declared.

Grab these packages install it and get going
http://mirrors.kernel.org/fedora/core/upda...87_FC5.i686.rpm
http://mirrors.kernel.org/fedora/core/upda...87_FC5.i686.rpm

to upgrade use command

rpm -Uvh /path_to_kernel_packs/kernel_rpm

Hi Vichitra,
After installing those 2 RPM, I followed the instructions to make the driver and replace it.
After that dmesg output shown me at the end
----------------------
8139too Fast Ethernet driver 0.9.27
----------------------

But lspci -vv -xx gives me the same Unknown error 🙁
-------------------------
Ethernet controller: Unknown device 1904:8139 (rev 01)
-------------------------

When I restart and try the dmesg,
I get the following for 8139too
--------------------
8139too: Unknown parameter 'irq'
8139too: Unknown parameter 'irq'
--------------------

I think it is tough to configure with this fake realTek card 🙁,
Can you please tell me which card I should buy so that it gets detected automatically without any issues...

Thanks,
Raffi

I just found this link
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/forum/showth...ht=LAN+Card+FC5
in fedora forum.
One guy had the same problem and solved it by replacing with Netgear 32 bit PCI adapter.

Anybody uses Netgear 32 bit adapter for AMD Athlon + FC5 ?

Thanks,
Raffi

Information about PCI IDS are stored in file /usr/share/hwdata/pci.ids, if you want to get rid of Unknown device message just open that file and add an entry for 1904:8139D, company name is SILAN.

When I restart and try the dmesg,
I get the following for 8139too
--------------------
8139too: Unknown parameter 'irq'
8139too: Unknown parameter 'irq'
--------------------
[/b]

Unknown parameter 'irq' is most probably due to bad option of value /irq/ getting passed to module, check your /etc/modprobe.conf and search for 8139too and see if there are any entry of irq as option next to it, if it is then remove it.

Yes SILAN is total crap chinese dumpware producer 😛.
Go for D-Link DFE-530TX or alike or INTEL chipset based card, DFE-520TX have via-rhine chipset and properly supported under linux without any extra tweak.
It would cost you around 300-500 .

hhhmm D-Link is expensive no really.. try some other local companies based on da realtek chipset and ask the dealer if u can return the card if it doesnt get detected.. thats just my advice 🙂

Maybe we should have a web page on this forum where we list the varous cards available in India that work and those that don't. I am not sure if the forum's web web code has such a feature.

I just think that the various lan cards available in India are sometimes different than those available in the west (except some popular companies like DLink, 3Com, Linksys, Intel, etc.). These cards like Silan, Intex, advik (spellings), etc. seem not to work under linux (if we go by the posts in this forum). The webpage may help people to stay clear of such trash cards.

It is interesting to fiddle with the driver files and make new modules if you find a card doesn't work but know that with some changes it might, but for newcomers to linux, it is best that they spend a little more money and buy a nic card from a popular company ... it saves a lot of hassle and frustration.

Also, it is usually NOT a good idea to use USB connection to connect to your ADSL modem. This makes the lan card even more important.

Just my couple of cents.
