External DVD writer for laptop

Hi,My Toshiba laptop is 3 years old and it looks like the internal DVD writer is not working as well as it used to. Is it advisable to buy an external DVD writer for this laptop. What other considerations should be looked into before buying it? Is an external DVD writer fast enough? Approximate cost? Thanks..

external dvd writers... hmm. they are a slightly risky deal. most them would require either two USB ports or one USB and one power adapter. but they work fine. speed is fine. costing? 3-4-5K.

you can get an internal dvd writer for 1000 bucks or so and casing for 1000 bucks or so....in total 2000!
