As I mentioned in another thread I got an ipad to play with for a few days (much to the shock and dismay of our dear admin). Here are some of my experiences and thoughts. 1. Hardware quality - superb. No doubts about it. I was impressed by how solid nexus 7 was but the finess in Apple products is palpable. 2. UI - butter smooth. Jelly Bean maybe smooth but iOS is a step ahead.3. The battery life is stupendous. I have used nexus 7 and its battery life was good, but this with bigger display (and probably bigger battery as well) takes the cake.I guess the good things end here. I have encountered a lot of problems in the last couple of days and found out I could not do a few things that were pretty simple on android. Or maybe i am a novice and the device is not jail broken and I keep comparing it to my rooted android devices. My biggest disappointment is with apps and the lack of free alternatives. Maybe I do not know the full potential of the App Store and maybe I will get better with time.1. Hard fact no. 1 - there is no gmaps app for ipad. 😢. I thought they had released one after the epic fail apple maps but it turns out that is only for iPhone. Don't know who should get more blame for this, apple or Google. Apple maps really suck. People who keep saying that they are improving must not be knowing about their status in India.2. There is no official gtalk app either. There is something called vtok in the app store but I have problems signing in at times. And it is not the official app.3. Every time you install a new google app, you have to sign in to it. Say you have gmail installed and you have signed in to it, and then you install google plus, you have to sign in again. This is annoying to say the least. Probably understandable that this is not a google driven system which android was.4. I had Great difficulty in finding a file explorer that could open and play files on my network locations. Esfilexplorer and astro file manager on android were superb.5. I did not know that you can not install another keyboard on an I device. What a shame. I found fleksy in App Store but there was no way to set it as default. It has a test screen and people write on this test screen, copy and paste it to wherever they want.6. I am yet to find free softwares that can Play Mkv files with sound. I googled around a bit and found out that developers are having problems because ac3 audio codec is now paid and developers can not afford to have it incorporated into media players. Never faced any problems with this on android. Mx player, free in the market can play almost anything. 7. I use an app called connectbot on android to control my Nas server. Realised that there was no app by the same name in App Store and the one that was similarw was 5$.8. No free version of tapatalk on App Store either. I believe there was a free version on android, At least you could read the forums using it though posting wasn't allowed.9. Every time you want to install a new app after a cold period, you have to validate your password. For paid apps it makes sense but for free apps? Maybe they wanted tighter security.10. When you install chrome, it gives you a message that this app may show age restricted material. Lol, how is safari different? Can I not watch porn on safariTo be continued..... Comments, suggestions and trouble shooting tips welcome. It's is an honest account so please no android apple shoot out here.

Er... there is a google maps app
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/google-maps/id585027354?mt=8
ConnectBot equivalent: https://itunes.apple.com/in/app/ssh-mobile-free/id481718124?mt=8
The free tapatalk version on Android has been discontinued long ago.
Regarding, keyboard etc. it can be done with a jailbreak. I had installed Swype keyboard after jailbreaking.

How is that an irritant unless you download Apps every half an hour or so? And in case you are setting up a new device, you can download Apps one after another, in which case iOS 6 should not ask you to enter a password except the first time.
You wouldn't find as many free Apps on iOS as you would on Android. Personally, I don't mind that since free versions are usually crap and the paid iOS Apps leave their Android counterparts behind. I think it is worth shelling out money on the likes of Tapatalk or Alien Blue than look for a free counterpart (which do exist for Twitter and Reddit).

You will get this notification for a lot of Apps that are capable of showing age restricted material. You get this notification when you download the app. Since Safari sits on your phone by default, you do not get any such notification for it.

I install an app on a new device as and when I realise I have a need for it sometimes twice or thrice a day. Keying in a password gain and again is an irritant at least for me if I have to do it multiple times a day. I would not agree that free apps are crap. I have both free and paid apps on android and I also donate to some developers. And believe me there are some fantastic free apps available at least on android. Regarding the notification, I found it so funny. Like the Steve jobs comment that if you want porn, go to android. Ha. How is safari porn free. Maybe they should have a disclaimer displayed during the first use of safari as well .

Yeah That zux man !!

IMO is supposed to be pretty awesome on iOS for an instant messaging client. Though they are also adding ads to the UI for revenue generation I hear.

1)Google maps are available on ios.2)Seriously who uses gtalk in this era? Imo.im does a ood job3)It's obvious my friend.4)Jailbreak. iFile.5)Jailbreak. Octopus keyboard.6)VLC plays almost anything.7)SSH Mobile.8)Answered above9)You should have updated the os or use jailbreak tweak passwordpilot.

Strangely When I search for Google maps on app store it doesn't show up. Though I was able to reach it through the link posted above. I use Google talk for video chatting. I Find it much better and Stabler than Skype. Apart from being multiplatform, the ease of use and the fact that you are signed into it through your mail and done need to open additional windows / application when on a computer are some things I like about it. I don't know of any other software that does the job as well. And i am very sure more people use gtalk than hike messenger. And you have an official hike app for ios. I wonder why Google has not made an official gtalk app.I have not considered Jail break as an option for the time being so I guess I will stay deprived of some of the pleasures. Can vlc be installed without jailbreak?

Try IMO man for instant messaging on iOS devices. You are fighting a losing battle with Apple restrictions 😀

The resolution of gmaps isn't upto the mark. Looks like a stretched version of iPhone app. Maybe I downloaded the the wrong version. Will check today evening.

Most of my files (and believe me there are many) are mkvs. Converting them to mp4s would be a real pain. The ssh client works well.

Then if your PC is on at the time, user air video, it will reencode the files on the fly
