Email providers will need to have servers in India

BANGALORE: Indian investigating agencies dealing with cyber crime have much to cheer following recent amendments to the IT Act. The amendments

passed by Parliament require internet behemoths like Google, Rediff and Microsoft — which provide free email services — to set up Indian servers. Not just that, they may also have to provide Indian email accounts for Indian nationals. This will have far-reaching ramifications for the millions of users of Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoomail in India.

Internet users will have email accounts ending with ‘.in’ instead of ‘.com’. While some like Yahoo already provide email services with this suffix, many others offer the global suffix ‘.com’.

The change is going to make a huge difference for the investigating agencies dealing with cyber crime, including data theft. Local mail IDs are a big problem across the globe, wherein the investigating agencies struggle to get personal details of account holders due to jurisdictional issues. As the servers of these accounts are generally overseas, mostly in the US, every country has to go through the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty and send letters rogatory (LRs) to get the details. The process of sending LRs takes more than six months.

Does this make sense ? How are they going to prevent a hacker/criminal from getting a email account from another country through a friend or associate and then using it.

Huge difference ? ....the Indian security agencies couldnt spot a boat with terrorists entering Indian territory. What if the hackers steal all the servers and ship them out of India ... OMG

hah. this simply cannot work. google probably already has servers in india. but not everyone can survive with their email servers being in india when buying web hosting in india is so freaking expensive. they need to make broadband access in india cheaper that would enable more service providers to host cheaper servers in india.

This is joke. Where is warthog?! How cud he miss to post this post?! 😛

i guess it if is indeed implemented, it would become a major mess for most international companies. google would probably automatically route all emails originating in india to their servers in india. but the fact remains, it is not implementable. it is similar to asking the entire internet to be localized on indian servers so that monitoring it becomes possible for indian authorities.

the funny thing is china can block things (youtube and all). china can monitor port 25. why cant Indian govt do that? why they want to turn world upside down, er, i mean right to left or west to east!

webmail does not use any special ports!and if india is trying to emulate china, india no longer remains a democracy.

sorry for being late. This is being done for total surveillance.TOTAL VIOLATION of privacy.:madness:.We have a privilege against search and seizure and laws like mcoca, uapa removes this privilege .

you think that they are not snooping your email?

remember this they have used this tech long tim back and now they announce to the media as it is new.

webmail doesnt use special ports? its port 80 or 443.

and there are ways to run transparent proxies to monitor such traffic.

i am not saying that India shud do what china does but I am saying if u have to have control then monitoring ports is better way.
