Dish TV slashes entry price by Rs 2k

NEW DELHI: Responding to the raging price war in the Direct to Home (DTH) market, Dish TV on Friday further reduced its entry price point to Rs 1,990 from Rs 3,990. Competitor Tata Sky had reduced its price point to Rs 2,990 early this week.

Dish TV COO Salil Kapoor said: “We want to attract new consumers through this competitive price point. They will have to pay up Rs 1,990 and will get a set top box connection and 12 months subscription free.

In addition, we have reduced the monthly subscription price to Rs 100, in which we will offer 125 channels, which is a good mix of all genres.” The company is clearly responding to Tata Sky’s offer of Rs 99 for 53 paid channels.

Talking about the losses Dish TV would incur by the price war, Mr Kapoor said he did not believe it will impact the bottom line. ”As a company, we have managed our subscriber cost and at this point we can comfortably offer the reduced entry price point to the consumer,” he added.

In a bid to woo analogue cable consumers to digital cable, the company has also reduced the price of its free-to-air channel bouquet to Rs 60 per month from Rs 100. It has been a race for volumes for all the DTH players.

Industry sources believe that the focus to garner numbers rather than average revenues per user could cost them heavily. While ADAG’s Big TV has already been launched, Videocon and Bharti are the other new entrants who will launch their DTH service before the end of the year.

Oh well, This is good offer from dishtv for all new subscribers, as their entry cost will also come down to 1990+ 200 installation with free one year subscription of 125 channels. where we will find all kinds of channels like music, movies, news, sports and entertainment. where as if you see the same offer from other dth operators then you find dishtv is offering lot more then those.

Please see below the follwoing quotes from Business standard.

Leading DTH operator Dish TV (3.75 million subscribers), an Essel Group venture, has now launched the largest offering of channels and services (125 channels) at Rs 100 per month just days after its rival Tata Sky (2.5 million subscribers) launched an entry-level subscription offer of Rs 99 per month (53 channels).

Both these DTH operators have dropped their monthly subscription prices significantly after Big TV from Reliance ADAG launched its services with one of the starting offers at Rs 100 (44 free-to-air channels) last month.

This means that any cable consumer can now shift to Dish TV's DTH connection by paying Rs 2,190 one time (an average of Rs 182 per month) for the Dish TV hardware, set-top box and receive 12 months of subscription of 125 channels that include entertainment channels, movie channels, sports channels and others.

Similarly, to get a Tata Sky connection, a consumer needs to pay Rs 2,999 (monthly average of Rs 249) and will also get an annual subscription of 53 channels including pay channels like Star Plus, Sony TV and active services.

"Our offer is in line with our overall target of acquiring five million DTH subscribers by March 31, 2009. At Rs 100 per month, we are offering the largest bouquet of channels — something for everyone in the house. This will help us speed up the subscriber acquisitions," Vinay Agarwal, chief executive, Dish TV, told Business Standard.
