HiMy BSNL Broad Band Dataone connection disconnects every half hour if I dont download at least 5MB in half hour. I called Bsnl technical people and asked them why ?. But they said that I have to look for that myself and that they have everything right on their side. I am using Win XP with latest service pack (SP2)If I download more than 5 MB in half hour, the connection stays on for unlimited time. When ever I just keep the connection on with out downloading or downloading small amounts (just browsing) it hangs up. I also checked my connection properties and have the "idle connection hang up time" to NEVER.Please helpThanks.

When ever my usage doesnt exceed 5 MB in half hour, connection gets disconnected and auto redials and connects again. From the above report u can see how many times I got disconnected (Every 30 + minutes)

Please help me find some solution.

Thanks.

You might not get a meaningful response, because your problem seems quite unique. Dataone is quite reliable otherwise, and as many members would vouch, there seldom are technical problems. Also, technically, it does not seem to make sense that your connection will be stable if you download min so much data, otherwise it becomes unstable. You might want to take a good look at your hardware and setup before concluding that it is a dataone problem.

Which modem do you use? Although you have mentioned earlier that your "disconnect if idle" is set correctly, it might be worth taking another good look at that - if you are getting disconnected after every hour when there is no activity, this could be the most likely cause.

There is a bug in WINXP SP2. I've heard about this long time back. You have to install a patch to fix the issue but I forgot the URL. I would suggest you to uninstall SP2 and check out.

I see that people from many states have this problem. I tried pinging but it does not help.

I think BSNL is doing this on purpose. But when I contacted them again today they said that there is nothing like that in their software and that even if you just download 10 KB in 24 hrs, u can still be online with out disconnects.

BUT this is not true. They are lying.

I think at any given time they want to keep the number of connections as low as possible. So they are disconnecting connections which are idle for say - 30 mts and they are assigning that IP to some others. I think as Dataone is in its early stage of development, they do not have sufficient number of IP address. So that is why they are not able to issue a static IP address to every Dataone user. They are using dynamic IP for every one.
On the Dataone enrollment application, they even mentioned that for the time being only dynamic IP will be issued and in future they plan to implement static IP for every user.

So till then we have to move forward with this disconnection problem.

Remember that this disconnection occurs only if you dont download more than some 3 or 5 MB with in a time limit of 30 mts. So if you want to download some thing at night 2 - 8 am, then you wont get disconnected at all as you would be downloading 256 Kb (bits) or 32KB (bytes) every sec.

If anyone has a solution to this 30 min disconnects which defies BSNL timer please post your solution/solutions here.

I am using modem given by BSNL.

Thank you.

what i cannot gauge is what has static & dynamic ip got to do with this disconnection thing? the lower the connections at any given moment of time, the lower the revenues to be earned by `bsnl'. a dynamic i.p. remains allotted to the person who last used it for roughly 5 minutes after he/she disconnects or is force-disconnected.. doubt whether `bsnl' can know in advance that someone will be connecting within the next 6 minutes so that they can disconnect another.juhitoy, it would be best if you could try to get in touch with some other people who are in the same exchange as yours and try to find out if they face the same problem.. if yes, then the problem is with the instruments at your exchange. best is that you demand from bsnl to send an engineer with a laptop so that the problems can be shown to him at your place. just be persistent and they will send. best of luck.. :) Pupudada!
