This exercise is to calculate the cost of installing a DTH with a sports add on.

First some comments.
* While the cost calculation is with respect to southern packages, similarly priced packages are available in general too.
* While discussion on this issue has happened here before, no clear cost-wise result has emerged. See links below.
* Main interest is in quality access to Tamil channels (mainly comedy) plus sports. In sports, I chose the minimal possible set (ESPN + Star sports)
* Movies and TV channels are not important (The reasoning here is personal. I download.)
* Taxes, where applicable, are calculated at 10.3% and rounded off. This is shown as "~=". Original price is also then mentioned. Otherwise, price is tax inclusive.
* Tata and Dish use MPEG-2, while Airtel, Sun and Big use MPEG-4. But, this is NOT a qualitative comparison. Only price matters.

The comparison of 12 month packages among the DTH providers is as follows:

* Sun
SUN DTH

Installation = 1250
Freedom tamil 999 ~= 1102
Sports (ESPN + Star sports) 76 ~= 88
= 3408

* Tata
Tata Sky’s New DTH Packages With More DTH Paid Channels, Sports Platinum Pack, Sports Gold pack, South Value Pack, Educational Gold Pack and more

Installation = 2000
South starter pack = 1250
Sports (ESPN + Star sports) = 40
= 3730

* Dish
»*Dish TV - Direct Tv channel guide, Dish tv user guide, satellite tv Services India and dish tv listing

Installation = 1690
South Silver + language add on (Monthly) 113 ~= 125
Sports is inclusive (all channels)
= 3190

* Airtel
Digital TV from Airtel

Installation plsu South value plus 1 language topup = 2600
ESPN plus (ESPN + star sports + star ckt) (Monthly) 45 ~= 50
= 3200

* Big
Starter Pack

Installation = 1490
South starter lite (Monthly) 115 ~= 127
sports excl (espn + star sports) (Monthly) 40 ~= 45
= 3554

To summarise, Dish and Airtel seem to be the cheapest. Although the price differential between all of them is not that much. Dish has all the sports channels, a major advantage. If sports is not required, then Sun is better.

Please compare the HD and HDDVRs also with latest rates

I was planning to re-do this work for the latest rates and technologies. Give me sometime.
