A friend told me his local broadband supplier informed him he was connected to other Sify cable users, and so could get viruses from them. Of course all users would be connected to the provider's hub, but to each other? This sounds crazy. Can anyone clarify?

Install a good antivirus and be tension free...

norton internet security 2005 + minimum 512 MB Ramand thats it!

My friend understands the need for antivirus protection. The troublesome part is that there should not be any direct connection between subscribers to the cable service. So we're wondering if the information he received is correct. Is that really the situation with Sify?

Yes all the users of sify internet service in a neighbourhood are put in one LAN and there is increased security risk of one user playing mischief with the other unless steps are taken by the users and the CTO.

Sounds like it's crazy but true. Thanks for the info.

eh? the users might be sharing hubs or switches if the CTO offers connections from multiple ISPs...
