Hi,I want to start a community radio in my area. Can you give me info. regarding the FM transmitters. I don't have any idea on the transmitters i can use. Will the ones given out in electronic hobby shops work ? They said it'll work for 2kms & with some tweaking u can increase that range. But i need only a max. of 5kms as thats the limit in community radio.
 
If you are talking about normal FM radio then its completely not possible . You can't just start transmitting on any FM frequency ( 88Mhz - 107 Mhz ) . Radio companies buy the frequency ( from DoT i guess ) so that they can transmit their radio .

so far Government of India has not approved the community
radio license to a single person or a group of persons { even
if the person(s) had good intentions } . A well established
social welfare organization / Educational institution can be
given the license depending on certain conditions .

And it is not legal to operate any type of transmitter without
a valid license . The acts are very strict (under Home Ministry)
