Comcast in India? Maybe!

Was speaking to a couple of my buddies back in california, and they are saying that Comcast is planning to extend its services to other places in the world, most notably india because of the broadband growth for it. So what does that mean guys? Expect to get at least 1mbps for a good rate. That's what he said, so this could really be a rumor, but if it's true, then India does have some good days ahead. Comcast is a true broadband company 🙂. Just don't get your hopes up too much though.
 
providing broadband is not as simple as entering a country and setup. u need a proper network to support the customers. unless they can setup wimax hubs straightaways.
 
Oh wow, that wculd be cool, but of course it could take years, IF it ever happens.

What is the deal with Wimax? In a country like ours where distances are large, and digging up roads and sidewalks means a 6-12 month process, wouldn't it be in the ISPs' best interest to use Wimax instead of laying down all these lines?
 
Thing is, there are lots n lots of barriers in India which may force them to look elsewhere.Forget abt the taxes, think abt the amount they would have to pay to our small crorepati politicians to get the licenses.
 
Reliance were planning the same thing...never came to light....will take Comcast forever getting past the political mess in our country.
 

Well hey, at least the consideration is there. Most foreign companies are looking to India now that it's on the global economic map. Could take a few years, but if it's going to happen, imagine the possibilities.
 
True, True... but honestly, (in my idealistic dreamworld) I would prefer if Indian companies pick it up and carry it forward... we have the brains, we have the manpower, we have the money - all we need is vision (and less corruption won't hurt 🙂 ).

Until recently, I never understood why Mahatma Gandhi drowned himself in sorrow at his greatest moment of triumph but I think he figured out that he had rescued India from a set of devils and delivered her into the hands of demons.
 
Sort of.... It's not like India is the only (or for that matter the most) corrupt country... in fact in the States. though corruption is less in quantity, it is way more in quality (e.g. this whole iraq bullsh*t).... as far as setting up a large business goes there, IMHO people still eat money... it's just that they were suits instead of dhoti, lungis....
 
Come on yaar, India is one of the most corrupt countries in the world. We come out smelling like roses ... if we compare ourselves to some African lost cause country. The common man is pretty much shielded from corruption in the States (I lived there for 20 years and not once did I have to pay anything under the table to get things done). But that is really not what I am debating. In India, illiterate (socially speaking) netas gain political power through the ballot box. They have no clue about how modern economics works but they see money flow because of it. So they have become extremely smart and ensured that no economic activity takes place without you passing through their bribery toll booths. If they had their way, they would have made pi**ing illegal so that they can get their cut from it. Such an attitude has caused immense damage to the country. 10 years ago, you had to wait years to get a phone connection in the socialist (read bribery toll booth) era. Yesterday, I saw a guy on the street in dirty clothes (he was probably a painter) who was yakking on a spanking new sleek cell-phone, something you get the same day from a phone company store. If our netas remove the hand that they have parked in the common man's pockets, more such wondrous sights can be seen in India.
