hi ,
i download torrents but it is governed by a scheduler to stop at 8 AM . i use BSNL night unlimited 2 - 8 AM BBG FN Combo 600 plan . i always switch off my torrents at 7:40 to be on safe side .
on Nov 15 , 2012 i saw one day i had used 1 GB between 8 am and 10:30 AM [ my pc remains open from 8 to 10:30 for work always ] . i called BSNL broadband cell and they told me there is no way for anyone to hack into my account .
still i reset modem password from admin to my own and changed my log in password and do not store it on the computer [ i always use bridged mode so i need to physically log in ]
yesterday someone used 680 MB of data at same time .
I have Bitmeter so on a 1 inch square window i can see if any malware is sending large amounts of traffic up or down for last 5 years .
how is this possible ? can Dataone be hacked ? can it be hacked on bridged connection when the modem password is changed ?

Do you have a WiFi router connected to this connection? Is it "secured" using WEP?

good point . forgot to mention . RJ 45 cables only . i am strong believer in hard line connections because i am paranoid about any type of hacking .

Then there's no way someone would leech your connection. All connections are port-binded. Which A/V are you currently using? Install ESET NOD32 Smart Security.

i use Avast free . point being any extra up / down traffic will show up on my Bitmeter display as yellow and red and it is kept right in front of my eye and Bitmeter is silent apart from tiny ups and downs as i open and close webpages .
i use a test for malware - i let computer idle and watch Bitmeter and CPU usage . both should die down totally almost . maybe few bytes up down as server to modem talk happens and CPU may use 1 % for 4 - 5 USB plugins i have .
my pc always passes that test .
and how can malware strike on Nov 15 and then May 22 . it will strike more often . frankly malware does not seem as something which can eat 1 GB in 2.5 hours . it is more stealthy . stealing key strikes , browsing history and so on maybe 1 MB at most per day .
also - i only download verified torrents that thousand others are downloading . and torrents are AV files they cannot contain malware and i do not download porn at all or watch it on any website . i do download pdfs like electric bill but modern pdf readers are very sensitive to malware tucked in pdf as is Avast .
as far as using Avast or Nod 32 or Kaspersky goes i found an article which compared many malwares across many AV softwares and all were unable to catch 3 - 4 . scores of Avast , Kaspersky , AVG , Nod 32, Norton etc all came out as near identical . all with 95 % detection but none had 100 % detection . i cannot find it now . it has great deal of details and essentially concluded that any well known AV is on the whole good . and Avast scored very very high top 4 or so .
BTW important it is shown in BSNL as down traffic not up traffic that is happening
it is as if the torrent never closed . but i make double triple sure torrent is closed and i in any case have a scheduler and i release the torrent file before closing it never keep it " on " and quit . i reload it next day

Better do a clean format and reinstall. If you don't use WiFi, something is leeching your connection.

Your bsnl username and password can be stolen easilyAnyone can enter your dynamic IP in browser to open router setup if username and pass is admin/admin where I can find bsnl username and password and use to to leach your bandwidth and speed but the leacher guy can be fined or banned by bsnl

Isn't port binding there.......

tried to multiquote but could not -
1 ) i format my pc every 2 months . after Nov 15 it has been formatted in Jan , Mar and start May .
2 ) it is not quite possible that i enter any possible dynamic IP address in my browser and hijack the modem . then almost all of us will be hijacked all the time . if you google hack Dataone nothing comes up almost .
3 ) BSNL insists that my Dataone connection can only be accessed from my phone number .
4 ) my modem password is alphanumeric long , random and only stored in my brain . there may be some way to hijack a PPPoE connection if power is on . but logically how can one hijack a bridged connection when password is set to " not remember " .
5 ) i am a new user [ from 2007 ] with address 117.xx.xx.xx not the old 59.xx.xx.xx
having said this - i once encountered something few years back - a reg entry for XP which made it original and made it possible to download updates . it was almost unknown . tucked away in an unknown blog and written by an Indian . there were complex workarounds to WGA at that time [ 2007 or so ] but this was simple and worked . just click on the Reg file and your Window was genuine . maybe some similar genius has learned how to hack BSNL server [ in the exchange ] and manipulate port binding and all from there . obviously he does not choose one victim or i will have suffered daily . but rather he chooses from a pool of victims perhaps in same exchange .
i have taken brute force method to disable him . restart modem daily at 8 AM and every 40 minutes after that . in that way i will get a new dynamic IP and he cannot find me again that day [ assuming he has been leeching from me from 6 AM ]
however there is a theoretical problem - i download at full speed 175 - 195 kB/s . if he was leeching from me my speed would fall . that does not happen . [ this anomaly can be explained by the fact that he also has night unlimited and downloads on his own connection till 8 AM and after 8 finds a victim . he must have some way to hack into BSNL exchange server in 2 - 3 minutes ]
when in new month last month's compiled report is available i can find no change in MAC id . all MAC ids for the month are same [ November 2012 that is ] . so all are from my own modem . so if someone is hacking it is at a higher level than my modem .
this is just so weird . i guess having to restart at 8 AM is the only thing i can do to prevent him .
OR there is a glitch in usage software . it adds a 0 sometimes . like 66789 kB is shown as 667890 kB . i am not a programmer but it may be some kind of date function error . certain sum of date and time makes it add a 0 at end .

get an unlimited connection n say goodbye to all usage monitoring
in XP WGA notification is installed in scheduled task, just delete the schedule n continue with automatic updates even if it is a pirated version
service pack 3 enables automatic updates
