Hi Ajay,

Thanks for the prompt reply. I have tried using Firefox, Opera, Chrome and Netscape but the same result. They all give a similar msg. " Opening website" OR " website found , waiting for reply". I dont think it is a issue with the browser as I am unable to even telnet or ftp ( cmd prompt ) form the PC . They also say connected and then nothing, no login prompt. I have duplicated the settings from laptop when connected via lan cable. Have also reset Xp winsoc. but same result. Please do let me know IF there is anything else that I might try. If I connect a USB modem like Reliance or Tata Indicom Photon + it works fine ( Borrowed from friends ). Really strange.

Sorry forgot to mention that DHCP is enabled , browser is automatically picking up settings and have also installed the latest driver from the Realtek website.

Start RUN type cmd ok new window type ipconfig /all post data here. ( for desktop with ethernet card)

Folowing is the result of ipconfig /all with static IP assigned with open DNS.

When I configure to obtain IP automatically also i get DHCP assigned IP with DNS as 192.168.1.159( my router Ip address changed from default on suggestion of BSNL Helpdesk). I face the same problem when I assign the default 192.168.1.1 IP to the router as well.

Thanks in advance Essbebe

The default gateway cannot have two Ip addresses.
If in WIFI mode it is 192.168.1.1 and you
access the modem settings, same thing
should show for desktop also

Check under Advanced Option LAN.
Lan address should be 192.168.1.1

the DHCP enabled range is out of range.
Change it to 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.5

Check this link for correct settings for sl2_141
similar hardware board and modem settings pages. confirm.

Hi Essbebe,

I changed the router ip to 192.168.1.159 only because the guy at BSNL who handed over the modem to me asked me to do so. I have since changed it back to default 192.168.1.1 and have assigned an DHCP range from 2-10.
However even with router IP assigned as 192.168.1.159 and my laptop picking up an IP of 192.168.1.160 OR 61( When PC is running), I am still able to browse form the laptop connected via WiFi or lan cable.
Here is the info form the router page:

Not clear what is the present problem now.
Post ipconfig all data for

If still desktop not working for internet:
Start RUN type cmd Ok
New window
Type ipconfig /all

Copy paste data here.

It by all probability should not be a dns issue as
--> you are able to ping google.com from command prompt, he is able to ping websites. This means the google.com is resolving to its ip address.

-- >Now when you say you have tried telnet.. Did you try just telnet google.com or else did you try telnet google.com 80. If you tried the latter and got a blank screen that means its connecting to the web server fine. Then the issue should be restricted to software.. But that chance is less as you say it worked via usb modem.

-- > Please check the security and parental control settings in the Nokia Siemens modem. You can access the advanced setup page by http://192.168.1.1/main.html
In this go to Advanced Setup > MAC Filtering -- Remove anything thats there
Now go to Advanced Setup > Parental Control -- Remove anything thats there.

-- > Another last resort you can try is to uninstall both your network adapters from Device Manager and Reinstall it after a reboot.

Let me know what happens anyways.

From Google search:
is generally recommended that if you have a website that is unreachable, you should use both the traceroute and ping commands before you contact your ISP to complain. More often that not, there will be nothing to your ISP or hosting company can do about it.

HI Guys,Thanks for the responses. I have tried with Open DNS in both router and PC + Laptop but no change. Laptop still works but PC cannot browse. When I repair the PC Lan card picks up the IP adressess just fine and does not give any error msg. Same with laptop. Only difference is after repair Laptop can browse whereas PC cannot.(LAN card is enabled in both cases)I tried to telnet both, default 23 and 80 but it just connects and does not give me a login prompt. Same with ftp from PC . Both telnet and ftp work fine from Laptop. There is no Advenced menu for DSL in the router. Only for wireless. MAC filter is disabled. There is no option for Parental Control either. When I login to the router via telnet form laptop, following is the menu options I get:- Main Menu1. ADSL Link State2. LAN3. WAN4. DNS Server5. Route Setup6. NAT7. Firewall8. Quality Of Service9. Management10. Passwords11. Diag12. Reset to Default13. Save and Reboot14. Exit ->Thanks in advance once again.Shakti
